AzimPremjiUniversity was established with a clear social purpose to make significant contributions towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. The university aspires to do this through the development of talent and the creation of knowledge which can facilitate systemic change in education and allied development areas. The Azim Premji University (APU) offers a learning environment with a focus on teaching, research and breakthrough inter-disciplinary work. It also offers ample opportunities to work closely with all the foundation’s other education and development programmes to strengthen the connection between theory and practice. Azim Premji University was established in Karnataka by the Azim Premji University Act 2010 as a not-for-profit University and is recognized under Section 2F of the University Grants Commission Act 1956. The beginnings of the University are in the learning and experience of a decade of work in elementary education by the Azim Premji Foundation. The University was founded as one of the key responses to the constraints and challenges that the Foundation encountered both within and outside the environment, and as part of a larger strategy to contribute to the Education and Development sectors in the country. The university was granted its charter by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly through The Azim Premji University Act of 2010. The first academic session started in August 2011.
The university’s interim campus is located within the premises of the PESSchool of Engineering on Hosur Road, Bangalore. The campus is spread over 12 acres and offers contemporary facilities and amenities. The programmes are designed to suit the requirements of both students and working professionals. The curriculum is modern, multi-disciplinary and contextually relevant, with a high degree of linkage between theory and practice. Programmes offered by the university are: POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES: The Azim Premji University's postgraduate degree programmes aim to develop competent and committed professionals for the education, development and related sectors in India. M.A. Education: The two year Mater of Arts (M.A.) - Education Programme at Azim Premji University is a broad programme of study that includes theory, practice, research, policy and planning in education. It has sought to forge interconnections with the larger context of education in India as well as with the range of principles and practices that inform education studies today. It attempts to develop educational professionals capable of analysis, reflection, conceptual thinking, and meaningful action. M.A Development:The two year Master of Arts (M.A.) - Development programme aims to prepare individuals capable of informed and thoughtful development action. It enables students to become aware of the complexity, depth and scope of the discourse of development, its ethical imperatives and its implications for policy and action with special reference to the Indian context. M.A. in Public Policy & Governance:The two year Master of Arts (M.A) in Public Policy & Development programme brings together an eclectic conceptual mix from law, economics, history, philosophy, politics and anthropology in the classroom. It provides an overview of our constitutional foundations, familiarizes students with the architecture of our economy and with our governance system, walks them through the policy process in India, enables them to reflect on ethical conundrums, evaluate programmes, analyse data, and experience the everyday Indian state. LL.M. in Law and Development:This one year postgraduate programme in Law and Development seeks to initiate a decisive, novel and meaningful intervention at the intersection of the domains of Law and Development in India. It will be a research and field intensive post-graduate programme in law. The programme includes mandatory courses on Law and Development, Law and Justice, Comparative Public Law and Legal Research Methods. This programme is designed for students who seek to make a mark in the legal system, government, civil society, academia and the world of ideas. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES: Three-year, full-time, residential Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees are offered in the following specializations: Physics or Biology Economics Humanities (History, Language & Literature and Philosophy) Students also have the choice of selecting from several minors including Physics, Biology, Economics, Development Studies, Education Studies and Data Sciences. Students can also opt for an Honours degree through advanced research projects. Faculty Details Members of our faculty are accomplished academicians, researchers, teachers, and agents of social transformation. LabsEligibility Criterion for PG Programmes: Bachelor's Degree in any discipline (including Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Commerce, Management, etc.) from a recognized University. Undergraduate students who are appearing for their final year examinations and completing their graduation on or before September 2017 are also eligible to apply. The offer of provisional admission is valid only on successful completion of graduation. Candidates with work experience are actively encouraged to apply. Criterion for LL.M. Programmes: 1. Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B. 3 years / 5 years) from a recognised University in India or abroad. 2. Candidates with relevant work experience are strongly encouraged to apply. Criterion for UG Programmes: 1. Class 12 / Pre University certificate from any recognized Indian Board or any valid international certificate equivalent to Class 12. Applicants appearing for their final examinations by June 2017 are eligible to apply. 2. Applicants who have completed their Class 12 / Pre University board examination in 2017 are also eligible to apply. Applicant should not be older than 19 years of age and should have successfully completed 12th standard examination (or its equivalent) with a minimum of 50% marks. 3. The offer of admission is provisional till proof of successful completion of Class 12 / Pre University study is provided. Selection Process The selection process for the Postgraduate, Undergraduate & LL.M. Programme includes an entrance test and a personal interview. NATIONAL ENTRANCE TEST: Applicants will have to appear for a written test that will assess the Reading Comprehension, Reasoning and General and Social Awareness. PERSONAL INTERVIEW: Applicants shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the entrance test will be called for a personal interview.
