Mongrace Montessori House was established in 1964 by the late Monjushree Chatterjee and Grace Wasim Pina. The name ‘Mongrace’ was coined by combining the first names of the two founders and the word ‘House’ was intended to imply a home where children are not exposed to the dull atmosphere or regimentation of a school room but are allowed to progress in an environment reminiscent of their homes.
The Suresh Amiya Memorial Trust (SAMT), a public charitable trust founded by the late Dr. Sadhan C. Dutt, took over the management of Mongrace Montessori House in 1984.
Suman Sood, principal, Mongrace Montessori House, describes the school as a “heritage building with thick walls, high roofs, wooden staircase, marble flooring and modern infrastructure which creates a grand aura”. All classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with Montessori learning materials.
Special Montessori modules are prepared by teachers and children from the age of 3+ works on them in a specially designed computer lab. The singing room boasts a grand piano, story telling and reading room displays books and a special conversation room provides a space for children to develop inter personal skills. Moreover the school garden is equipped with a see-saw, slide, merry-go-round and rockers.
The school offers the following programs:
Play House – for children aged from 1 year 10 months to 2 years 5 months
Montessori I – for children of age group 2 years 6 months to 2 years 11 months
Montessori II – for children above the age of 3 years
According to a school spokesperson Montessori materials and activities are used to help children learn the art of concentration – the first step in child development. Various activities such as picnics, sports, celebration of important events such as Independence Day, Rabindra Jayanti and Children’s Day are regularly organized. An annual two-day exhibition where Montessori materials are displayed and presentations are made by teachers, is the highlight of all school activities.
A special art and craft teacher helps children develop their visual spatial and bodily kinesthetic skills through a wide range of activities. Magic shows, puppet shows, summer and winter camps are also organised.
Application forms can be downloaded from the school website. If the parent is an alumnus of Mongrace, a photocopy of a document proving the same should be enclosed in the application form along with photocopy of the child’s birth certificate.
Admission age is 1 year 10 months.
