Overview

Sophia College for women was founded in 1941 affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The college is managed by the governing body of the Society for Higher Education of Women. The Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and lay staff form the staff of the college. Sophia College for women is a Christian minority institution which welcomes students of all denominations. The goal of this college is persistent search of Wisdom through education. The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in France in 1800, by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. It is dedicated mainly to the all-round education of youth. There are a number of schools and colleges of the Society all over the world, besides widespread innovative non-formal involvements. According to a long-standing tradition, the staff takes a personal interest in the harmonious growth of each student entrusted to their care.

Campus

The Campus yet being located on the heart of metropolis maintains a green oasis. The College has well-designed, airy buildings set around a beautiful central lawn, a terraced garden and herbal garden. The main building, which is a heritage structure, has been enlarged over the years to accommodate lecture halls and an audio-visual room. The Sophia Center for Women's Studies and Development, the Sophia J. N. Heredia Counseling Centre and a fully equipped Audio-Visual Hall are located in the Sophia Andersson Annexe. The Gymkhana and Gymnasium are located in the basement of the main building.

The college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and offers various courses in arts, science and mass media.
