Overview

Goenka College for Commerce and Business Administration, Kolkata was established in 1903 when the director of public instruction, Government of Bengal, introduced a two year senior course in commercial studies in Presidency College, Kolkata, which later developed into a separate commercial institute in 1905. The college’s present campus was donated by the Goenka family and later came to be known as Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration. According to a college spokesperson, “The uniqueness of the college lies in the fact that it is an institution that teaches exclusively commerce subjects and had started teaching the subjects even before the University of Calcutta had its commerce stream.” The 105 years old college operates directly under the control of the Government of West Bengal and recently obtained the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the introduction of MBA course from the academic session 2010-11.

Campus

The college library has a collection of over 60,000 books, journals, and magazines and a well furnished reading room. All the students of this college are members of Students’ Health Home, where they can avail facilities like outdoor consultation, hospitalization, operation, x-ray, pathological tests, medicines, spectacles etc. free of cost or at a concessional rate. The campus also includes agymnasium and a well-equipped common room with facilities for indoor games that can be used by students during recess hours.

Admission

Undergraduate course Admission procedure for B.Com starts usually in the month of June after the declaration of the results of HS examination by WBCHSE. Applicant must have passed (HS or equivalent exam.) with at least five recognized subjects including English (full marks for each subject not less than 100). All admission related detailsare available in the college admission websitehttp://www.goenkacollegeadmissions.com Postgraduate courses A candidate intending to take the M.Com course must have passed the B.Com examination from the Calcutta University. Candidates who have passed honors/major course in commerce with first class from other universities are also eligible, subject to the availability of seats. M.Com admission procedure generally starts in the month of August/September after declaration of B.Com examination results by the Calcutta University. All admissions are provisional and are subject to the approval of the University of Calcutta.

Accommodation

The college has no hostel of its own but a few seats in the Eden Hindu Hostel are made available to male students of B.Com course.
