The Madras Medical College (MMC) was founded on February 2, 1835, making it the oldest medical college in India, along with the Medical College, Kolkata. The college started as a private medical hall and was regularised into a medical school in 1835. The school was then attached to the Government General Hospital and was sponsored by the state. On October 1, 1850, it was accorded the status of a college and was christened as Madras Medical College.
The first batch of MMC students graduated in 1852 and were granted the Diploma of Graduate of the Madras Medical College. In 1857, it gained affiliation to the University of Madras.
The college became affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University from July 1988. Eventually, the college became an independent university called the Madras Medical College and Research Institute (MMC & RI). The ‘independent university’ status was withdrawn and the college was re-affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, dropping the suffix “Research Institute” in 2000.
Madras Medical College offers world class infrastructure with Wi-Fi enabled lecture halls, a well-stocked library with a huge collection of medical literature, a multi-cuisine canteen, facilities for sports and recreation, and well-equipped laboratories.
