National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) was promoted by the Government of India in 1963 with the assistance of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) through the International Labour Organization (ILO) to create skilled professionals. It was funded by the Government of India and registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It is an autonomous organization governed by a Board of Governors comprising eminent personalities from the government, industry and academia. The institute was formerly known as the 'National Institute of Training in Industrial Engineering'. Later, it was rechristened 'National Institute of Industrial Engineering'. In its initial days, the institute had knowledge centers in Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. However, during the late 80's, these nodal centers were shut down and replaced by a single institute currently located at Mumbai. The institute is also engaged in applied research and offers professional consultancy services in various facets of management. NITIE has been recognized as one of the 15 Centers of Excellence along with the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. NITIE is also a core member of INDEST along with the IITs, IIMs and NITs.
