Overview

Promoted in 2003, Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) has within a short span of time established a national reputation as a premier legal education institution that continually strives towards excellence.

Named after the eminent legal luminary Justice Mohammed Hidayatullah, the university was established by the Government of Chhattisgarh under the Hidayatullah National University of Law, Chhattisgarh, Act (Act No.10 of 2003).

HNLU is the sixth in the series of National Law Schools across India. It has been included in the list of the universities maintained by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and is recognised by the Bar Council of India under section 7 of the Advocates Act 1961.

Campus

The university initially operated from a classical heritage building adjacent to the Raj Bhawan in the heart of the city. Since 2009, the university has been functioning in the newly constructed campus at village Uperwara, about 22 km from the city campus. The new campus is built over 65 acres of land adjoining a beautiful lake amidst verdant surroundings. The academic block comprises a three-storied library with air-conditioned reading hall and an air-conditioned computer lab equipped with 150 computers. Moot Court Hall at HNLU serves as a laboratory to test the advocacy skills of the students of HNLU.

The air-conditioned classrooms are equipped with teaching aids such as DLP projectors and interactive boards. It also hosts a conference hall and an amphitheatre. The Halls of Residence at the new campus have been constructed to provide single room accommodation to each student.

Academics

HNLU offers two 5 year integrated programmes — the BA LLB and the BSc LLB courses. There are 10 semesters spread over five years, with 2 semesters per year. The course offers compulsory core subjects, language subjects, compulsory law subjects and optional law subjects.
