Overview

The University of Delhi, also known as Delhi University, is one of India’s premier universities, well regarded for its high standards in teaching and research and attracts eminent scholars to its faculty. Set up in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly, the President of India is the Visitor with the Vice President as the Chancellor and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India the Pro-Chancellor of the university.

Delhi University’s strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research has made it a role-model and path-setter for other universities in the country. The university had a modest beginning with just three colleges St. Stephen’s College (1881), Hindu College (1899) and Ramjas College (1917), two faculties (Arts and Science) and 750 students.

Spread across 69 acres of green, hilly terrain, the university’s south campus was set up in 1973 to facilitate easier access for the residents of South Delhi.

Campus

The North Campus hosts the three founding colleges of the university. It now has the School of Open Learning, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Law, and following 13 colleges:

The campus also houses hostel facilities for residential students. These colleges also have off-campus academic premises in the Ashok Vihar, Pitampura, Rajouri Garden and Netaji Subhash Place neighbourhoods of Delhi. The campus also houses centres for graduate study and research, which include the Cluster Innovation Centre, Delhi School of Economics, Delhi School of Journalism and the Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research (ACBR).

Placements:

The central placement cell (CPC) of the University of Delhi aims to get students placed in reputed multinationals, government Organisations, NGO’s and the private sector. All students registered with CPC are provided placement assistance, counselling for employment and self/social entrepreneurship. The CPC assures logistic support to the visiting companies at every stage of the placement process by making university infrastructure available to them. The CPC acts as an interface between the industry and the students, primarily enabling students to select their career options. The CPC liaisons with corporate organizations to provide suitable jobs and internship for the candidates completing their studies from the University of Delhi. The CPC also conducts seminars and workshops to enable the students of University of Delhi to become successful professionals.

Recent placement highlights- 2021: Lady Sri was the college within DU North campus which generated highest placements, recording a highest CTC of INR 30 LPA while the average CTC stood at INR 9.4 LPA. Other constituent colleges of DU comprised Hindu College which recorded the second highest CTC of INR 29 LPA, followed by St. Stephen’s which recorded a highest CTC of INR 26 LPA.

Admission

The University of Delhi has several constituent colleges, some of which conduct merit-based admissions, while other accept students only through entrance-based admissions. Here is an overview of the generic admission procedure of the University of Delhi:

Undergraduate Admission- Merit Based

Selection Criteria: Academic merit in qualifying (10+2) examination.

Eligibility: 10+2 in relevant stream from a recognised board with varying minimum aggregate percentages in the qualifying exams (minimum: 40-50% marks).

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates need to register for admission by filling up the online application form from the official DU website portal along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will be offered admission based on marks scores in last qualifying examination. The university will release a cut-off list on the basis of which candidates shall be shortlisted.
  • Shortlisted candidates may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Undergraduate Admission- Entrance based

Selection Criteria: DUET scores (or other entrances such as JAT, depending upon the college/course applying to) and performance in interview/group discussion (if applicable).

Eligibility: 10+2 in relevant stream from a recognised board with varying minimum aggregate percentages in the qualifying exams (minimum: 40-50% marks).

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates need to register for admission by filling up the online application form from the official DU website portal along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the DU Entrance Test (DUET) to qualify for admission. Some courses like B.M.S. accept other entrances such as the Joint Aptitude Test (JAT) followed by a group discussion and personal interview round.
  • Candidates will be offered admission based on their entrance scores and performance in group discussion and/or personal interview (if applicable). Shortlisted candidates may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission- Merit Based (only for DU graduates)

Selection Criteria: Academic merit in graduation.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from Delhi University with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates need to register for admission by filling up the online application form from the official DU website portal along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • 50% of postgraduate programme seats are filled via merit-based or direct admission for DU graduates. Candidates will be offered admission based on marks scores in graudation. Selected candidates may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission- Entrance Based

Selection Criteria: Entrance exam scores and performance in group discussion and/or interview.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates need to register for admission by filling up the online application form from the official DU website portal along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the DU Entrance Test (DUET) (or other entrances depending upon the college and the programme) to qualify for admission. Qualifying the entrance is followed by a group discussion and/or personal interview round.
  • Candidates will be offered admission based on their entrance scores and performance in group discussion and/or personal interview. Shortlisted candidates may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Medical Admission (M.D./M.S./M.D.S.)

Selection Criteria: NEET-PG/MDS score and rank.

Eligibility: Medical degree in relevant specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in NEET entrances.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates need to register for admission by filling up the online application form from the official DU website portal along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates must apply and appear for the NEET-PG/MDS entrances. After securing a valid score/rank, candidates will have to register and participate in the counselling process for choice locking and allocation of seats.
  • Candidates offered seats via the counselling process may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Doctorate Admission- Ph.D.

Selection Criteria: Entrance test scores and performance in personal interview.

Eligibility: Master’s degree in relevant discipline and specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 55% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates need to register for admission by filling up the online application form from the official DU website portal along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the two-hour entrance test (MCQ format). Candidates will be shortlisted based on their entrance test marks, following which they will have to appear for a personal interview.
  • Candidates will be offered admission based on their entrance scores and performance in personal interview. Shortlisted candidates may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Achievement

The University of Delhi was ranked 18th overall and 11th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

DU was ranked 474th internationally, 67th in Asia and 42nd amongst BRICS nations by the QS World University Rankings 2020, while the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 ranked DU 155 in Asia.

Hostel facilities are provided on campus. 2o constituent colleges provide hostel facilities to students which are availed on a merit basis.
