Overview

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) also known as Hyderabad Central University is a public university. Founded in 1974 through an Act of Parliament (Act No. 39 of 1974) as a Central University, UoH is wholly financed by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Shri B D Jatti was the first chancellor of the University and Gurbakhsh Singh - professor of Chemistry at the Banaras Hindu University, was the first vice-chancellor. The governor of the state of Telangana is ex-officio the chief rector of the university, while the President of India is the visitor. In January 2015, UoH has been selected for the Visitor’s Award for the Best Central University in India. The "objects of the university" as envisaged in the Act are “to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and by the example of its corporate life, and in particular to make special provisions for integrated courses in humanities and science in the educational programmes of the university and to take appropriate measures for promoting inter-disciplinary studies and research in the university."

Campus

The 2300 acre campus hosts the Indira Gandhi Memorial Library, which is the first university library in India. It features a collection of about 4,00,000 monographs, text books, back volumes of journals, theses/dissertations, CDs/DVDs., subscription to 500 print journals in various disciplines and access to more than 25000 e-resources including e-books; Central Instruments Laboratory (CIL) a central facility with state-of-art sophisticated analytical instruments to cater to the needs of the faculty and research scholars in the university, guest house, participants hostel (for participants of Academic Staff College refresher and orientation courses), shopping centre, food court, post office, BSNL office, SBI ATM facility and a bioinformatics infrastructure facility, health centre and counselling centre. The facilities for sports and recreational activities include a multipurpose playground on the campus for cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, tennis, basketball and athletic events. Modern facilities for physical conditioning are available at the New Indoor Gymnasium along with facilities for Table Tennis, Shuttle Badminton, Chess and Caroms.

Academics

The university has twelve schools of study - Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Management Studies, Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication, Engineering Sciences & Technology, Medical Sciences, Economics and Computer/Information Sciences. While some schools are single-discipline schools, others have departments and centres attached to them. There has been a special emphasis on promoting inter-school and inter disciplinary teaching and research in the university. M.A. / M.Sc. Admission

UoH offers facilities for post-graduate, 5-year integrated Master’s degree courses, and research studies in sciences, humanities, social sciences, performing arts, fine arts, communication, management studies, medical sciences and engineering sciences and technology. Only those candidates who have completed a three year undergraduate programme through an examination conducted by a university/ autonomous college can apply and selection is based on performance in the entrance examination. However, candidates who have passed two year degree course may also be considered for admission if she/he has undergone a further one year bridge course and passed the same. The entrance examinations in the case of MPA, MFA, and MA Communication in the Sarojini Naidu School comprises written and practical tests/interviews. The weightage for written test and practical/oral tests will be in the ratio of 60:40 for M.A. Communication and 50:50 for other courses in the SN School. Candidates who perform well in written test are called for practical test/interviews at Hyderabad. The entrance examination for M.Sc Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, M.Phil, M.Tech Computational Techniques, IC Technology, Medical Biotechnology, Bio informatics, and Ph.D. comprises a written test and an interview (after qualifying in the former). The written test carries 75 marks and the interview 25 marks. International Students UoH accepts students from various countries including Iran, Myanmar, Thailand, Mongolia, Syria, Tanzania, Yemen, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Philippines, Ethiopia, South Africa, Guyana, Uzbekistan and Japan. The Study in India Programme (SIP) attracts hundreds of students from Europe and North America for short-term courses. UoH also aims to undertake joint research and teaching projects that allow credit transfers and grant of joint degrees to students, in areas of mutual benefit. The Office of International Affairs coordinates international collaborations and responsible for UoH’s bilateral agreements and participation in networks and organisations. Achievement

UoH is reckoned among the ‘Universities with Potential for Excellence’ by the University Grants Commission. The university was sanctioned a grant of INR 30,00,00,000 under this scheme for interfacial studies and research and holistic development for a period of 5 years (2002-2007). UoH has been awarded top grade of A ***** by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). NISSAT (National Information System for Science and Technology) of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, rated UoH in the ‘High Output – High Impact’ category among the top 50 institutions in India with publications in citation - index journals. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India sanctioned over INR 4,00,00,000 under FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology) to the four Science schools of the university to augment research facilities. The UoH is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
