Overview

Founded in 1999, the International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru commonly known as IIIT-B offers Integrated M.Tech., M.Tech., M.S. (Research) and PhD programmes in the field of Information Technology. In February 2005, IIIT-B was declared as a ‘Deemed University’ under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956.

IIIT-B aims to build on the track record set by India in general and Bengaluru in particular, to enable India to play a key role in the global IT scenario through a world class institute with a focus on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation.

IIIT-B boasts collaborations with the IT industry, leading international academic institutions, and renowned scientists and industry leaders to offer students the best possible education.

Campus

Located in Electronic City, the IIIT Bengaluru campus features meticulously landscaped greenery interspersed with modern architecture. The wholly residential campus hosts separate hostels for girls and boys equipped with round the clock security and WiFi network. A modern cafeteria serves nutritious and hygienically prepared meals and snacks to the students.

The institute hosts world class facilities for academics, research and sports. Having started with a modest collection of books donated by the founder-director Prof. S. Sadagopan, the library presently boasts a comprehensive collection of books and journals both in print and electronic format apart from curricula based resources useful for the academic and the research community of the institute. 

Academics

The institute offers programmes that lead to post-graduate degrees. The graduate study programmes lead to (a) course-based outcomes, namely the Integrated Master of Technology (Integrated M.Tech.), and the Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Information Technology and Electronic Systems Design, and (b) research outcomes, namely, the Master of Science by Research/ Master of Science (Research) and Digital Society and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These programmes offer training that is comparable to the best anywhere, and cater to different needs. The course-based degree programmes are full-time resident programmes that offer the students a comprehensive learning in an area of specialisation. The research degree programmes, which may be undertaken as a full-time or a part-time registration, train the students to undertake quality research work in a specific research domain. The course-based degree programs have a fixed timeline whereas the research degree programmes are student-paced. Working professionals employed as research scientists/engineers at reputed organisation or government agencies are encouraged to pursue part-time research degree programmes.

Achievement

In October 2009, the Tandon Committee Report assigned (cf. Annexure VII (b) of the report) IIIT-B a score of 41 (the highest for any deemed university).
