Overview

Bangalore University (BU), Karnataka is a public state university and a part of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and affiliated by University Grants Commission (UGC). Founded in 1964 as an off shoot of Mysore University, Bangalore University  was established to include institutions of higher learning in Bangalore, Kolar and Tumkur. The university started its journey with the Central College (CC) and the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) and in 1965 honours courses in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics and Zoology were offered by the university post graduate departments.

Originally intended to be a federal university, Bangalore University has grown to become one of the largest universities in Asia and emerged as an affiliating university. The university was first accredited in 2002 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with Five Star rating and was re-accredited in 2008 with ‘A’ grade.

The university boasts six faculties – arts, science, commerce and management, education, law and engineering, 43 post graduate departments, a post graduate centre at Kolar, three constituent colleges, 665 affiliated colleges (of which 115 have PG Courses) and several other centres and Directorates of higher learning and research under its purview. The university offers 50 postgraduate courses and employment oriented diploma and certificate courses. The unversity has launched the five year Integrated Courses in Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Business Studies and the four year BS Programme and will be starting a course in Criminology and Rehabilitation from the 2015-16 academic year.

Campus

The university moved to its new campus named ‘Jnana Bharathi’ in 1973 which is spread across 1100 acres. BU functions from both the campuses – main campus at Jnana Bharathi and city campus at Central College.

The Jnana Bharathi campus houses the JB campus library which features a collection of 325,000 volumes, subscriptions to over 250 national and international journals and magazines (110 national journals, 62 international journals, 68 magazines), many post graduate departments are located in the JB campus along with office of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance Officer, Directorates, Centres of higher learning, NSS Bhavan, outdoor stadium, Gandhi Bhavan, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Study and Research Centre, and Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive policy.

The JB campus also hosts a gymnasium with facilities for indoor games, basketball courts, kho kho ground and swimming pool.

The City Campus houses the city offices of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance (Examination part), UGC Academic Staff College, Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education Centre, Directorate of College Development Council, Directorate of Physical Education and a few post graduate departments and support services, with a state of the art Jnana Jyothi Auditorium. Besides, the Central College also has the Central College Cricket Pavilion where the Karnataka State Cricket Association was first established and trained several cricketers of international repute, basketball court, volleyball court and lawn tennis court.

Placements:

Bangalore University has a centralized placement cell at the Canara Bank School of Management Studies, Central College, which caters to the Jnana Bharathi and Central College Campus post-graduate students’ pre-placement training and recruitment needs. The BU placement cell builds relationships with the recruiters and helps provide job opportunities to the students. The BU placement procedure begins with companies being invited for campus placement drives, following which the recruiters provide students with the job specifications and details. Students wishing to participate in the recruitment drive may register themselves in the placement cell and submit their resumes. During the placement drive, companies recruit students based on the resumes and their job requirements. Students successfully recruited by companies are then informed via the placement cell and are provided with offer letters.

Recent placement highlights- 2019: More than 80-90% students were placed in the 2019 placement drive in the engineering campus of BU (UVCE). The average CTC ranged from INR 4 to 5 LPA, while the highest CTC ranged from INR 14 to 15 LPA. Among the 150 companies that participated in the recruitment drive at UVCE, Microsoft, TCS, Infosys, Dell, Cognizant, Accenture and Royal Enfield were top recruiters.

  • Candidates will be selected based on their academic merit. The university will release a list of selected candidates based on their academic merit in last qualifying examination. Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission- M.B.A. and M.C.A.

Selection criteria: PGCET/KMAT/MAT entrance scores.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admissions by filling out the online application form from the official BU website along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the PGCET/KMAT/MAT entrance, followed by the PGAC counselling process.
  • Candidates will be selected based on their PGCET/KMAT/MAT scores. Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission- M.E./M.Tech. and M.Arch.

Selection criteria: GATE/PGCET entrance scores.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech. or B.Arch.) in relevant specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admissions by filling out the online application form from the official BU website along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the GATE/PGCET entrance, followed by the counselling process.
  • Candidates will be selected based on their GATE/PGCET scores. Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Doctoral Admission- Ph.D.

Selection criteria: University-conducted entrance test scores and performance in interview.

Eligibility: Master’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 55% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admissions by filling out the online application form from the official BU website along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the university-conducted entrance test, followed by an interview. Candidates with valid UGC NET/ CSIR-NET/ JRF Test/ SLET/ SET/ GATE scores as well as M.Phil. degree holders will be exempt from the entrance test and may directly appear for the interview.
  • Candidates will be selected based on their entrance test scores and performance in interview. Selected candidates may proceed with the verification of documents and payment of fees to confirm their admission.

Achievement

The QS World University Rankings ranked Bangalore University 351-400 in Asia in 2020.

The NIRF ranked BU 100th overall and 68th among universities in 2020. 

Accommodation

Bangalore University hosts 12 hostels with separate accommodation for boys and girls. Of the 12 hostels, six are located at JB Campus; four hostels are housed within City Campus and two hostels in Kolar district. Accommodation is offered only to postgraduate students whose parents do not reside in Bangalore city; exception is made in the case of physically handicapped students.
