Overview

Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam is a premier educational institution and one of the four affiliating universities in the state of Kerala. Established on October 2, 1983 Mahatma Gandhi University has jurisdiction over the revenue districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. The university has 18 departments, an international inter university centre, six inter university centres, seven inter school centres, 36 self-financing departments, 82 aided affiliated colleges (of which eight are colleges with Potential for Excellence), 230 unaided affiliated colleges and 273 recognised research institutes. It imparts education in the interdisciplinary as well as conventional disciplines of science, social science and humanities besides the professional disciplines of Engineering, Technology, Legal studies, Pedagogy, Pharmacy and Nursing. Mahatma Gandhi University offers research programmes in 40 disciplines through its own schools as well as through its approved research centres. The university boasts collaboration with various national agencies and institutions including the UGC, FIST, DRS, ISRO, COSIT, DIT, DST (Nano Mission), CSIR, DAAD, STEC, ICMR, BARC, MOEF, ICCR, ICHR, IED, IIFT, Institute of Chinese Studies and the Sahitya Akademi. The university is also associated with international research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute of Technology, Germany; Brown University, USA; University of Nantes, France; California Institute of Technology, USA; University of Toronto, Canada; Catholic University, Belgium; Heidelberg University; Germany and the Institute of Political Studies, Rennes, France; Trent University, Canada; IPFDresden, Germany; University of Paris and University of Strasbourg. The university’s faculty boast about 20 patents, including four from the USA and considerable percentage of the alumni of the university are comfortably placed in the country and abroad as academicians, scientists and professionals.

Campus

The university’s 110 acre main campus called Priyadarshini Hills at Athirampuzha, is 13 km off Kottayam. Mahatma Gandhi University also boasts seven satellite campuses in parts of Kottayam and the neighbouring districts. The campus amenities include spacious classrooms, well equipped laboratories, a well stocked library, placement and counselling centre, an infirmary, a computer centre, a book store, an ATM, and sports facilities for various outdoor and indoor games.

Admission to MSc and MPhil programmes is based on all round performance in the national level entrance examination, marks in the qualifying examination and a subject interview. Admission for PhD is based on a national level entrance examination or on NET/GATE performance.
