Overview

Apeejay School, Nerul, Mumbai is a co-educational day school run by the Apeejay Education Society. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi and is a member of the National Progressive Schools Conference (NPSC). Promoted in 1986, the school initially offered education from nursery, kindergarten to class IV. Higher classes were added in subsequent years.

The school offers state-of-the-art IT facilities. Every classroom, staff room and the administrative block is provided with a TV set and a desktop computer, which are used as learning aids.

Campus

The four-storeyed school building comprises a well-stocked computerized library with more than 10,000 books, newspapers, journals and magazines, computer labs with LAN, internet and other state-of-art facilities besides classrooms.

The school also has well-equipped laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology and a Science Park hosting gadgets and other exhibits. Each gadget is installed with an explanation plate, a note about how to play/operate the gadget, the principle involved and application of the concept.

The school’s infirmary provides first aid and medical care to the students whenever required. An attendant is attached to it exclusively and the school’s medical officer and a health committee member attend to students. Behavioural and career counseling services are also offered.

There is adequate arrangement for indoor as well as outdoor games. Coaching for cricket, football, martial arts and roller-skating is provided.

Academics

Pre-primary and Primary

The curriculum of the pre-primary section is designed for students to learn through participation and experience. The curriculum is an integration of Montessori and play-way methods and the teaching methodology is learner-centered and follows the theory of multiple intelligences.

Students of the primary section are taught English, Hindi, mathematics, general science and social studies. Classes I and II students learn environmental studies. Computer class is compulsory for all students. Project works, group discussions and varied other activities relevant to science and other subjects are planned to provide social understanding, ignite the spirit of enquiry and sharpen scientific acumen.

A continuous and comprehensive assessment system is followed at the pre-primary and primary levels.

Middle and Secondary

As directed by the CBSE, the three-language formula is followed for classes VI to VIII. In addition to English and Hindi, students can study either Sanskrit or Marathi as a third language. Students of classes IX and X study English, Hindi/Sanskrit, mathematics, science and technology, and social studies.

Great emphasis is laid on the development of communication skills and overall development of the child’s personality. The progress of each child in all three domains (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) is evaluated continuously.

The school follows the Continuous & Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme to assess ability, application of knowledge, creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Senior Secondary

At the Plus Two level, the two streams of study offered are science (English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or computer science or economics) and commerce (English, mathematics or informatics practices, economics, business studies and accountancy).

The system of monthly test, semester examination and common Apeejay exams is followed for the assessment of students of class XI and XII. Remedial teaching is provided to help low achievers.

Admission

Pre-primary/ Kindergarten

An advertisement is published in the newspapers in the last week of November following which the forms are made available at the school. A child seeking admission to the nursery class should be 3 years 6 months old on the June 1 of that year.

Interaction with parents and students takes place in November or December and a list of shortlisted candidates is displayed in December/January for the academic session beginning in June.

Primary, Middle and Secondary

Admissions are done in June. Information on seats available and the date on which the forms will be distributed is put up on the school notice board in May. Students have to write an entrance test and attend an interview with the selection committee.

Senior Secondary

Admission to class XI is based merit achieved in the class X board exams and the cut off percentage is decided by the school.

Achievement

The school has received the International School Award from the British Council in October 2006 for outstanding development of its curriculum. It has also been included in the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) and will receive a grant of approximately £24,000 (Rs.20,40,000) for a period of two years.
