Overview

St Gregorios High School, Chembur, Mumbai is a co-educational day school, affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi. The Gregorian Nursery and Kindergarten sections started operations in 1993, following which, the main school took shape and began functioning in 1994 with a handful of 21 students under the supervision of the chairman, Late C.V. Thampi.

At present, the school offers classes from Kindergarten to class XII and boasts a student strength of about 1750 and 100 staff members. The school maintains a low teacher student ratio for effective and quality education. Gregorios Says a school spokesperson, “Only better individuals make a better country and hence, we strive to instill the necessary values in the children and provide them with a holistic, well rounded education.

Campus

St. Gregorios, Mumbai hosts a modern campus, with state-of-the-art infrastructure and essential amenities. A five-storey school building houses well-equipped science laboratories, modern computer labs and a library stocked with a variety of books and periodicals.

Sports facilities include a basketball court, long jump pit, a throw ball court and a stadium.

Academics

The school follows the syllabus prescribed by the CISCE and offers classes from lower Kindergarten to class XII. The curriculum is designed strategically for each section. At the pre-primary level, the school follows the Playway method to enable each child to develop at his or her own pace. There is continuous evaluation and emphasis is laid on oral skills and activities rather than on formal learning.

At the primary level, a theme is chosen and the entire scheme of studies is built around that topic. There are no text books, instead children use worksheets prepared by their teachers. There are no examinations and evaluation is both qualitative and quantitative.

The secondary level is a blend of academics, value based education, co-curricular activities and sports for the overall development of the child. In classes IX and X, children can choose from a number of subjects such as computer applications, commercial applications, environment applications, French, technical drawing applications and art.

Extra-curricular Activities:

St. Gregorios, Mumbai offers varied co-scholastic activities to its students such as music, art and craft, yoga, and karate among others. Sports such as basketball, long jump and throw ball are also encouraged and the school promotes activity clubs like the Scrabble Club, Interact Club and field trips to keep students actively involved beyond academics.

Admission

St. Gregorios invites interested parents to apply for their wards’ admissions in Junior KG around the last week of November. Shortlisted candidates are then interviewed and admissions finalized by January. The school offers about 40 seats for admission in Junior KG. Admission to other classes is subject to vacancies.

Achievement

St. Gregorios, Mumbai has represented India at various international cultural festivals held at Sweden, Malaysia, Switzerland, Korea, and Taiwan. Over the past decade, the school has published eight books written by its own students as part of their project work, Gregorios and is the one of the first schools to have started a multilingual language laboratory in the city, offering French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese books.
