Overview

Amber Valley Residential School, Chikmagalur is a coeducational residential school affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi and the Karnataka Pre-University Board.

Campus

The 45-acre school campus hosts stone buildings with tiled roofs, courtyards, open verandahs and terraces. There are well-ventilated classrooms of size 650-700 square feet, which can accommodate not more than 25 children; the classrooms have an attached open patio. Primary classrooms have attached rest rooms and comfortable mattresses for playing and sleeping. All classrooms have open lockers for books, a section for computers (with intranet and internet facilities) and instructional material.

The school hosts a well-stocked library, well-equipped labs, a conference hall, an amphitheatre, a telescope tower, two separate music rooms, music studio and dance studio, facilities for art and craft and drama.

The school also boasts excellent facilities for indoor sports like table tennis, chess, carom, and board games. The outdoor sports facilities include a cricket ground, a 25-meter swimming pool, volleyball court, basketball court, tennis court, 400-meter athletic track, football ground and a gymnasium. The school also conducts hiking trips during weekends for the students.

Academics

The curriculum framework for classes I to VIII has been designed by a group of experienced educationists, psychologists, teachers and artists with inputs from international curricula.

At the junior level (classes I to IV), emphasis is laid on practical experiences to learn concepts and ideas; audio-visual aids are used to create interest and improve learning. Excursions are held for actual study of life objects. Math concepts are introduced in the math lab where students learn shapes, solve puzzles and conduct experiments with different mathematical objects.

The school boasts a teaching methodology that is built around its premises for children to experience the concept before learning it through reading or writing and this teaching method is applied to all areas of learning – English, second language, math and environmental science.

At the middle school level (classes V to VIII), the intellectual component is greater than at the junior level and children are encouraged to explore and investigate on their own, and to make use of library and internet resources. The teaching method used at this level is active learning where students learn to think for themselves on a wide variety of issues.

At the high school level, children are prepared for the ICSE/ISC/PUC public examinations with a well laid out routine of unit tests, end-term exams and practice exams. The teaching methodology for high school focuses on writing and thinking, raising students’ levels of consciousness with regard to environment, to make them articulate, knowledgeable and self-confident individuals who can make a difference in society.

Admission

Amber Valley Residential School admits children in classes I to IX, class XI and in PUC I and II.

Minimum Age Requirement as on 1st June for LKG is three years six months and grade 1 is five years six months.

For admission in class XI and PUC, the student must have successfully completed class X exams.

Procedure:

Parents can download application form from the school website, fill in details, scan and email the form to [email protected]. The original copy should be mailed to the school’s postal address along with other documents mentioned in the form and registration fee draft for Rs.300 for Indian students and US$10 for overseas students. The draft must be drawn in favor of “Amber Valley Residential School” payable at Chikmagalur, Karnataka, India.

The school conducts an assessment test to check proficiency level in English, second language, math (class II to IX), chemistry, physics (class IX) at the level of the last class attended. The tests are based on the school’s curriculum, which is accepted internationally.

After the assessment test, qualifying candidates are called for an interaction with the principal and admission offer letter is handed out to successful candidates. The process is completed with payment of required fees.
