Overview

Rajghat Besant School, Varanasi is a co-educational, residential school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It was founded in 1913 by J. Krishnamurti. The school is managed by Krishnamurti Foundation established in 1928 as a charitable institution by J. Krishnamurti and Dr. Annie Besant. The school has been named after Dr Annie Besant.

The school has about 400 students from class I through XII, 280 of who are boarders. The class strength is not more than 25 students and the teacher student ratio is 1:7.

Campus

Sited on a 300-acre site near Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganga, Rajghat Besant School hosts state-of-the-art infrastructure including an assembly hall designed by architect Surendranath Kar and inaugurated on the day of Basant Panchami by Rabindranath Tagore.

The school hosts a huge amphitheatre used for educational, social and cultural events, rooms for art and craft, dance and music, a well equipped computer and science labs, a carpentry workshop, separate libraries for junior and senior sections and a well equipped 20 bed hospital under the care of a well qualified and experienced resident doctor. The kitchen and dining hall provide well balance food which includes fresh milk twice a day and vegetables from the school farm.

Achyut Patwardhan, a close associate of J. Krishnamurty, further expanded the area adjoining the school and founded the Rajghat Rural Centre, which houses two rural schools, one each for boys and girls, a hospital, a vocational training institute for women and a farm, which offers its services free of cost, all managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust.

Academics

Affiliated with CBSE, the school started advocating a stress-free learning environment that nurtures young minds long before the CBSE introduced the CCE system. There are no examinations till class VIII and only continuous review of progress is done. The junior school has single section classes and learning takes place mainly through activities – particularly arts and crafts – to nurture creative development.

From class VI onwards, the school lays great emphasis on value education and class strength is limited to 25 students. The school maintains a teacher pupil ratio of 1:7.

Extracurricular: Extracurricular activities such as Batik, pottery, yoga, dance and music form an intrinsic part of the learning experience. Various social and cultural activities are conducted in the school and regular SPIC-MACAY programs are organized. The school also hosts an annual educational excursion which is awaited for eagerly by the students.

Physical and sports education includes athletics, gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, handball and table tennis.

Admission

RBS is primarily a residential school. We offer the option of day scholar status only for new admissions in classes III, IV and V. Please note that all children, even if admitted as day scholars, will have to become boarders from class VI onwards.

Interested parents can collect the application form from the school on payment of Rs.1000 by cash or crossed Demand Draft drawn in favour of “KFI RAJGHAT BESANT SCHOOL” payable at Varanasi or download the form from the school website and courier it with the draft of Rs 1000 and requisite documents.

Duly filled forms must be submitted by November 22 and the first rounds of interactions with parents and candidates will be on November 30 for classes III – IX, December 14 and 21 for III-IX and XI and January 11 and 25 and February 1 for all classes. The school’s academic session begins on March 24, 2014.

The age limit for class III: Minimum seven yrs. four months, maximum eight yrs. three months on 1st April of the year of admission

Accommodation

There are separate hostel facilities for boys and girls and each hostel is managed by a resident teacher or house parent; usually students of two classes share a hostel. A common kitchen/dining hall provides nutritious and wholesome vegetarian food for all residents.
