Overview

AMET University – Academy of Maritime Education, Chennai is an autonomous engineering and technology university. It is India’s first maritime university that offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes in naval science, marine engineering and related disciplines. 

Founded in 1992, over the past two decades, AMET University has established an excellent reputation through academic cooperation agreements up with several offshore maritime education institutions including the South Tyneside College, Hull College, and Glasgow College of Nautical Sciences, all in the UK. During the early stages of tis growth and development, AMET was affiliated with the Birla Institute of Technology Mesra (BIT Ranchi).

Under the affiliation agreement, AMET students were certified in marine engineering, nautical science, and GME and management studies. But in 2007 AMET was awarded university status by Union HRD ministry under de-novo category. A Naval Architecture department was added in making AMET University one of only five in India offering this study programme.

Campus

The campus classrooms are equipped with overhead projectors, slide and video projectors. AMETUniversity is also well-equipped with physics, chemistry, computer, engineering mechanics and electronic mechanics laboratories.

The university’s hostel accommodates 1,100 students and is equipped with medical facilities, clean and hygienic kitchens and dining halls. The university also offers 24 hour high-speed wi-fi connection throughout the campus including hostel. And sports facilities for volley ball, kabaddi , a swimming pool, gymnasium and football.

Academics

AMET has signed academic collaboration agreements with several institutions of higher learning in India and abroad, including SouthTynesideCollege and the Glasgow College of Nautical Sciences. Its Department of Naval Architecture has signed academic collaboration with the universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. Moreover AMET University also offers two B.Sc (Hons) degree programmes with the University of Plymouth, IIT-Madras, DNV AcademyIndia and A.P Mollar Denmark

General Information

Admission

Admissions are based upon performance in a preliminary all-India online exam, followed by a written exam on the AMET campus for short-listed students.
