Overview

Founded in 1920, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh is a public university which occupies a unique position amongst universities and institutions of higher learning in the country. It was established bythe great visionary and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad khanas Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875. AMU is recognised by the University Grant Commission (UGC), and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The university is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, religion or gender. AMU offers more than 300 courses in the traditional and modern branches of education and boasts more than 28,000, students, 1,342 teachers and some 5,610 non-teaching staff on its rolls.

Campus

The 1,155 acre university campus hosts building department, central automobile workshop, guest house, M.A. library, auditorium, computer centre and 19 halls of residence for students with 80 hostels. AMU hosts separate fields for cricket, hockey, football, tennis, riding and athletics. There are also facilities for indoor games and sports such as billiards, chess, carom, table tennis, swimming and badminton.

Academics

AMU offers Master’s degree courses, Bachelor’s degree courses, post M.A/M.Sc diploma courses, P.G. diploma courses, diploma and advance diploma courses, senior secondary school certificate, bridge courses and part time courses. AMU has12 faculties - agricultural sciences, arts, commerce, engineering & technology, law, life sciences, medicine, management studies & research, science, social sciences, theology, unani medicine - each comprising of several departments of studies and also maintains a number of colleges, institutes, centres and schools. The university maintains one primary school, seven high schools (including one for the visually challenged), and two senior secondary schools for boys and girls. The university also offers courses in Indian, Oriental and Western languages. The medium of instruction is primarily English. Extra-curricular activities: Alongside academics, AMU encourages students to participate in various sports such as cricket, hockey, football, tennis, riding and athletics. It also offers facilities for indoor games and sports such asbilliards, chess, carom, table tennis, swimming and badmintonand cultural activities.

Accommodation

AMU offers19 halls of residence (cluster of hostels), administered by a Provost and a number of teacher wardens. Each hall maintains a common room with facilities for indoor games, a reading room, library, common dining hall, sports clubs and a literary and cultural society.
