Bengaluru: Coaching centres to remain shut for in-person classes

January 6, 2022
– Reshma Ravishanker

Two days after the Karnataka government announced the closure of educational institutions in Bengaluru in the wake of a surge in the Covid-19 cases, the department of public instruction has ordered that all coaching centres in Bengaluru remain shut.

The order to suspend on-campus classes applies even to coaching centres conducting classes for class 10 and 12 students.

In Bengaluru where the positivity rate is nearing 4%, considering the recommendations of the state’s Technical Advisory Committee, it was decided following a meeting chaired by the chief minister on Tuesday that all schools and colleges (except class 10-12, medical, paramedical and nursing colleges) would conduct classes in the online mode only for two weeks.

Giving explicit instructions, the commissioner of the department of public instruction, R Vishal has in an official note, “it is clarified that all coaching institutions for all classes including 10, 11 and 12 in Bengaluru Urban district will also remain closed in the said period.”

Deputy directors of public instruction in all educational zones within the Bengaluru Urban limits have been asked to intimate coaching centres in their respective areas to keep all in-person classes suspended until further orders.
Even during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, several parents had raised concerns as coaching centres remained operational even during the lockdown period due to a lack of explicit orders citing otherwise.
