A recent survey conducted by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to identify out-of-school children in Bengaluru found that atleast 6,936 of 1.08 lakh students were out of school.
In a report that was released on Tuesday, BBMP special commissioner for Education, Preeti Gehlot on Tuesday identified these out of school children.
Last week, the BBMP appointed ten enumerators in each ward to visit every household and conduct the survey. They also appointed Joint Commissioners as nodal officers in each of the eight zones to oversee the survey.
This was done in accordance with the Karnataka Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules, 2012 which requires local bodies to maintain a register of out-of-school children. Survey was conducted via the mobile app ‘Karnataka H2H Children Survey App’, available on the Karnataka Government App Store.’
The survey started on February 24, 2025. According to the report on March 10, 2025, the highest number of dropouts are from Bommanahalli zone. The lowest is in Yelahanka zone, where from 4349 students, 271 dropped out.
Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to minister for school education and literacy Madhu Bangarappa, Nagasimha G Rao, director, Child Rights Trust sought that an action plan be made in association with the education, women and child development, labour, social welfare department and the police to bring out of school children back.
“The government must work in coordination with local NGOs and check why children have remained out of school. Constitute an expert committee and improve infrastructure in schools wherever need be,” said Rao.
