Best colleges to study math programmes in India

India hosts several world-class institutions for mathematics education and research. They include the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; the IITs; Indian Statistical Institute, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai among others which offer high quality undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education.

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Bangalore (estb. 1963): B.Math (3 years) degree programme, M.Math (2 years).

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata (estb. 1931): M.Math (2 years).

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI, estb. 1989): B.Sc degree in math and computer science (3 years), M.Sc (math), PhD.

Both ISI and CMI admit students in their bachelor’s degree programmes on the basis of an entrance exam held in late May each year followed by personal interview. They also admit students who have qualified for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) or are Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) fellows.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore (estb. 1909): BS in math (4 years), Integrated Ph D (5 years) and Ph D. For the BS (math) programme IISc admits students based on the merit list of KVPY Fellows, IIT-JEE and NEET-UG.

Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai (estb. 1962): Integrated M.Sc-Ph D (5 years) and Ph D. Candidates have to write the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Ph D scholarship screening exam followed by interview held in March/April every year.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (estb. 1959): BS in math (4 years). Admission is via the IIT-JEE held in early April. 
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai (estb. 1945): M.Sc, Integrated M.Sc-Ph D programme (5 years), and PhD.

Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad (estb. 1966): Integrated M.Sc-Ph D (5 years) and Ph D. Students are admitted through the NBHM Ph D scholarship screening exam followed by interview.

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Pune, Mohali, Kolkata, Trivandrum and Bhopal: BS-MS five-year integrated programme. IISER admits students through the IIT-JEE and KVPY scholars with outstanding performance in the class XII board exam. It also offers MS and Ph D programmes in math.

National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar: Five-year integrated BS-M.Sc programme, M.Sc-Ph D integrated programme and PhD.

University of Hyderabad (estb. 1974): BS-M.Sc integrated degree (5 years) and M.Sc degree in math, for which it selects students through a written test followed by interview in June.
