Overview

Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata is a Civil Service and Research institute in West Bengal which is recognized as an institute of national importance by the 1959 act of the Indian parliament. Established in 1931 and oiginally affiliated with the University of Calcutta, it grew out of the Statistical Laboratory set up by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in Presidency College, Kolkata and is one of the oldest institutions focused on statistics. ISI functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) of the Government of India.

Mahalanobis, the founder of ISI, was deeply influenced by wisdom and guidance of Rabindranath Tagore and Brajendranath Seal. Under Mahalanobis’ leadership, the institute initiated and promoted the interaction of statistics with natural and social sciences to advance the role of statistics as a key technology by explicating the twin aspects – its general applicability and its dependence on other disciplines for its own development. Its early reputation led it to being adopted as a model for the first US institute of Statistics set up at the Research Triangle, North Carolina by Gertrude Mary Cox.

The institute is now considered as one of the foremost centres in the world for training and research in computer science, statistics, quantitative economics and related sciences. Key areas of expertise of ISI are statistics, computer science, mathematics, mathematical economics, operations research and information science and it is one of the few research oriented Indian schools offering courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Campus

The Kolkata campus of the Indian Statistical Institute is located in a sprawling 30-acre estate on the Barrackpore Trunk Road (B.T. Road) in the Baranagore suburb of Greater Kolkata. It consists of two approximately equal parts – the office complex and the residential complex, – separated by a public road (Girish Chand Ghosh Street). The principal buildings in the office complex are the main building, the geology building, the library building, the administration building and the Amrapali.

The central library of ISI Kolkata houses over 200,000 volumes of books and journals with a special emphasis on the field of statistics and related studies. Also having branches in other facilities, the main branch also has a collection of official reports, reprints, maps, and microfilms. The library receives over a thousand new technical and scientific journals every year and has databases on CD-ROM and is working on further digitization of the collection. The library has a separate collection of works on the topics of mathematics and statistics called the Eastern Regional Centre of NBHM collection, funded by grants from the National Board for Higher Mathematics. It also looks to set up research unit in artificial intelligence.

The residential campus at 205 and 206 B.T. Road premises includes several staff quarters, the guest house, medical welfare unit, boys’ hostel, research scholars’ and ISEC hostel, ladies’ hostel and parts of several service units. Some residential quarters are located in Deluxe Garden, an enclaved located on the west side of the Gopal Lal Tagore Road, near the office campus. ISI also owns Gupta Nivas, a property located on the east side of B.T. Road, north of the office campus. This building has a remarkable history, but is no longer in use.

Admission

Undergraduate Admission- B.Stat., B.Math.

Selection Criteria: Scores obtained in two written tests and interview.

Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognised board with mathematics as a compulsory subject.

Admission Process:

• Candidates must register for admissions by filling up the online admission form through the ISI Kolkata portal along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates will then have to appear for two MCQ-type written tests conducted by the university, clearing which they will be invited for the interview round.
• Candidates will be shortlisted based on marks obtained in both written tests and performance in interview. Candidates may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.

Postgraduate Admission- M.Stat., M.Math.

Selection Criteria: Entrance exam scores.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline from a recognised university.

Admission Process:

• Candidates must register for admissions by filling up the online admission form through the ISI Kolkata portal along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates will then have to appear for an entrance exam conducted in two parts- one MCQ-type part and one short questions-type part.
• Students having a B.Stat. (Hons.) degree from ISI are offered direct admission without any entrance exam or interview.
• Candidates will be shortlisted based on marks obtained in both parts of the entrance exam. Candidates may confirm their admission by verifying documents and paying the fees.

Postgraduate Admission- M.S., M.Tech., M.Lib.I.Sc., PG Diploma

Selection Criteria: Written entrance test scores and interview.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline from a recognised university.

Admission Process:

• Candidates will then have to appear for the written entrance tests, following which they will be invited for the interview round.

The web ranking of ISI Kolkata according to 4 International Colleges and Universities (4ICU) is 1693. According to the web ranking published by Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, ISI currently holds the world rank of 1352. In the subject-wise academic world ranking of Computer Science, Indian Statistical Institute features in 101—150 category. The Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata is ranked 2nd in Computer Science research by mean citation rate, p-Index, h-index among all universities in India.

Some residential quarters are located in Deluxe Garden, an enclaved located on the west side of the Gopal Lal Tagore Road, near the office campus. 

The construction of the Senior Boys’ Hostel (popularly called the Research Scholars’ Hostel or RS Hostel) was completed in 1989. Apart from the research fellows, M.Tech. students also stay in this hostel. One section of the hostel is reserved for the international students of the International Statistical Education Centre (ISEC).
