What is Statistics?

Statistics is the science concerned with the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of empirical data. Statistics is an interdisciplinary field and finds application in scientific, industrial and social sectors. Statistics deals with all aspects of data; descriptive statistics describes properties of samples and population data, while inferential statistics uses those properties to test hypotheses and draw conclusions. Statisticians are particularly involved in drawing reliable conclusions about large groups and phenomena based on observable characteristics of samples representing a small portion of the larger phenomenon.
