Established in 2009 by an Act of the Parliament, the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) is one of the 16 new central universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan Period. The UGC XI Plan aims to provide access to quality higher education to people in less educationally developed districts which have a Graduate Enrolment Ratio of less than the national average of 11 percent. The main objective of the university is integrating the components of teaching, research, innovation, training and skill development (TRI-TSD) with an aspiration to excel in dual degree, post graduate and doctoral programmes. The university offers programmes in arts, humanities, management, sciences and engineering with 16 departments spread across eight schools and one centre offering nine dual degree programmes, 15 master degree programmes, and 16 research (PhD) programmes.
The 654 acre university campus is sited near Kadaganchi village in the district of Kalaburagi, Karnataka. The campus hosts a well stocked library with a collection of reference books, text books, CD/DVDs, dissertations, thesis, magazines and news papers, well equipped laboratories, health centre, health centre, guest houses, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, hostels, bank and post office.

The university issues admission notification for all courses in the last week of April every year and entrance examinations are conducted in the first week of June which are followed by counselling schedule and admission for dual degree programs, BBA programme, MA/MSc/MCom/ MBA and MSW programmes from mid June to early July.
