Students appearing for the ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) exam from 2024 and onwards will be tested only on the syllabus prescribed for class X and XII respectively in literature in English paper, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) said on Wednesday.
Till 2020 the board exams in the subject were held on the syllabuses taught in Classes IX and X in ICSE and XI and XII in ISC.
The decision was taken by the CISCE at a meeting of its standing committee of examinations on May 23.
“…. For the ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) Board Examination, only the syllabus prescribed for Class X and XII respectively, will be tested,” the CISCE said in a circular issued to heads of all its affiliated schools on June 8.
In 2024 the ICSE and ISC board exams in English will be held on bifurcated syllabus for the first time, Gerry Arathoon, CISCE secretary said.
“The syllabus of all subjects taught in the ICSE and ISC courses except English were bifurcated by the council before. The ICSE and ISC is a two-year course. So, we have decided to bifurcate the syllabus of English as well,” Arathoon told EducationWorld
The bifurcation of the syllabus will reduce the pressure of students, principals of several schools said.
The CISCE has asked the schools to inform the students and guardians regarding the change.
The class wise bifurcated syllabus for Literature in English at the ICSE and ISC levels were also released by the CISCE on June 8.
In 2020 the ICSE and ISC exams in Literature in English were held on the Class IX and X syllabus and Class XI and XII syllabus respectively. However, in some subjects the exams could not be held in 2020 because of the outbreak of Covid 19.
In 2021 the exams were not held at all and in 2022 the exams were divided into two semesters.
