The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination has (CISCE) introduced six new subjects for the upcoming academic year 2025, reinforcing its commitment to a future-ready curriculum that equips students with 21st-century skills.

Five new subjects, namely- Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, Modern English and Bhutia Language, have been introduced for classes XI and XII. The sixth subject, Bhutia Language, is also being offered for classes IX and X.

Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, previously introduced as a combined subject in Classes IX and X (ICSE level), will now be offered separately for Classes XI and XII (ISC level). Both these subjects can be opted alongside Computer Science, which allows for comprehensive core foundational skills in the subject, ensuring vertical mobility for aspirational students. Applied Mathematics and Modern English serve as alternatives to core Mathematics and standard English, catering to a more functional and practical usage of key concepts of both subjects. Applied Mathematics course caters to careers in non-stem fields, focusing more on practical applications of concepts such as financial mathematics, statistics and data analysis.

Modern English focuses on enhancing functional communication, contemporary language usage, and linguistic skills in practical contexts. Additionally, the inclusion of the Bhutia Language in the Indian language curriculum for classes IX-X and XI-XII underscores CISCE’s commitment to promoting linguistic diversity and preserving regional heritage according to a note by the CISCE.

“The introduction of the six new subjects at the Senior Secondary stage reflects CISCE’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education by integrating interdisciplinary learning and skill-based competencies while encouraging dynamic career pathways. The details of the syllabi for the new subjects have been incorporated in the recently released “Regulations and Syllabuses” for ICSE and ISC Level for the upcoming academic year, available on the CISCE website,” the board said.
