Government-Aided Madrasa Students in Uttar Pradesh to Receive Uniforms

Nishant Saxena Efforts are underway to provide uniforms to more than one lakh students studying in 558 government-aided madrasas in Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed Javed, Chairman of the UP State Madrasa Education Board, announced that the initiative aims to distribute the uniforms to students in July this year. During the board meeting in January, two significant decisions were made regarding madrasa education. Firstly, the implementation of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) syllabus in madrasas in a phased manner was agreed upon. Secondly, plans were set in motion to remove any obstacles hindering the distribution of uniforms to madrasa students. Currently, students in state-run schools receive an amount of Rs 1,200 for their uniforms, which is directly transferred to their accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Dr. Iftikhar expressed that efforts are being made to secure approval from the government for providing the same amount to madrasa students once the proposal is accepted. Notably, no dress code for madrasas has been finalized, allowing the institutions the freedom to choose attire such as ‘kurta pajama’ for male students and ‘salwar-kurta’ for female students. Highlighting the educational landscape in Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Iftikhar revealed that the state currently has over 25,000 madrasas, with 16,513 being recognized by the UP Board of Madrasa Education. Out of these, 558 madrasas receive government aid, while the remaining are affiliated with the Madrasa Education Board. The aided madrasas accommodate more than one lakh students, who will benefit from the forthcoming uniform distribution. Additionally, there are approximately 7 lakh students enrolled in around 8,500 unrecognized madrasas across the state. Dr. Iftikhar further emphasized that students in government-aided madrasas from Class 1 to Class 8 have been provided with textbooks from the Basic Education Council free of charge. This initiative aims to support the educational development of the students and facilitate their learning process.
