The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) on Thursday reminded schools to allow students to choose two second languages for the ICSE examinations.
One of the two second languages chosen by students will have to be Hindi, the CISCE has clarified.
In a letter to the heads of all ICSE schools, Gerry Arathoon, CISCE chief executive and secretary said: “ Please note that candidates may offer two Second Languages in Group I, where one of the Second Language must be the subject Hindi.”
The CISCE had included the provision on choice of two second languages for ICSE examinations long before, the principal of an ICSE school in Kolkata said.
The CISCE today issued the clarification following complaints from a section of students alleging that their schools were refusing to offer the choice of an additional second language in ICSE.
According to the provision mentioned on page 6 in Section B of the ICSE regulations: “Candidates are permitted to take an additional Second Language in Group I, where Hindi is one of the Second Languages.”
In some states like Punjab it is compulsory for students to study the state language till Class X. For example in Punjab , studying Punjabi is compulsory.
But many students who would want to shift to another state for higher studies would often want to study Hindi instead of Punjabi as a second language, the principal of an ICSE school in Punjab said.
The CISCE had decided to allow students to study two second languages considering the interest of students studying in the ICSE schools in states where studying the state language is compulsory.
English is taught as first language in all ICSE schools.
In the letter the CISCE chief asked principals to inform every student, teachers and parents about the provision on choice of two second languages in ICSE.
