In a compelling move towards climate action and sustainable urban living, JBCN International School, Mulund, successfully hosted its inaugural Cyclothon 1.0. This community-driven initiative brought together over 150 participants—including learners, parents, and staff—with nearly 100 families cycling together to advocate for cleaner air and eco-friendly mobility in Mumbai.
The journey began in December with an inspiring masterclass by Firoza Dadan, Mumbai’s first Bicycle Mayor and a passionate climate action advocate. Through her Cycle Chala City Bacha initiative under the Smart Commute Foundation, she planted the idea of making cycling a mainstream and sustainable mode of transport—a message that resonated deeply with the JBCN community and culminated in the Cyclothon.
The event, held early Sunday morning, was led by Dr. Viswanathan Iyer, Neurosurgeon and current Bicycle Mayor of Mumbai, who champions cycling as a fast, healthy, and environmentally responsible means of transport. Supporting the movement, Decathlon Viviana partnered with the school to promote the practice of cycling as part of everyday life for families.
Kicking off at 6:30 AM, the Cyclothon saw enthusiastic participation across age groups, as cyclists rode through a carefully curated route symbolising their commitment to a greener tomorrow. The initiative also aimed to raise awareness about the need for cyclist-friendly infrastructure and sustainable urban planning.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Iyer remarked, “Catch them young was the mantra. Young children today are highly aware of sustainability and pollution control. What better way to reflect that awareness than through a Cyclothon? JBCN International School has taken an initiative that is truly worth emulating.”
Expressing pride in the initiative, Ms. Padma Negi, Principal of JBCN International School, Mulund, said, “Our learners are the future, and we believe in equipping them with values that go beyond the classroom. This Cyclothon is more than an event—it’s a step towards embedding sustainable practices into our daily lives. We are thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation from our learners and their families.”
The event concluded with an exciting lucky draw, where two families won brand-new bicycles sponsored by Decathlon Viviana Mall. Adding to the energy and wellness focus of the event, Max Protein partnered with the school to provide nutritious snacks to all participants—reinforcing the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
The overwhelming response to Cyclothon 1.0 is a testament to JBCN International School, Mulund’s commitment to shaping environmentally conscious citizens. Through such initiatives, the school continues to nurture changemakers—one pedal at a time.
