Karnataka: Minister proposes meditation for students everyday at school

November 3, 2022

Minister for primary and secondary education, BC Nagesh has asked the department of public instruction to design a 10-minute meditation plan for students.

In a note to the principal secretary of the department, that he had sent on October 20 asked them to plan a meditation session for all students from primary to pre-university stages.

Nagesh has said that this will boost a child’s confidence, reduce mental stress, and boost their stamina to be able to perform better at school. He said that this will also be a good hobby for children to pursue while also drawing a positive response from them.

“It is apt for students to meditate on an everyday basis. A particular time must be dedicated for this every day for students to practice meditation in schools,” Nagesh has said.

The letter comes days after the Karnataka state primary school teachers association wrote a letter to Nagesh asking for meditation to be included in the everyday schedule of students.

Chandrashekar Nugli, the secretary of the association, said that they had written to the education minister on October 15 in this regard.

“Many of our physical training teachers approached us with a request to allow some time in the mornings for this. When children assemble at the school in the morning, they should be allowed some time in silence. This will help them unwind and improve their concentration,” said Nugli.
