Karnataka: Sick Children Should Stay Home Amid COVID Spike

Private schools across Karnataka have asked parents not to send students to schools if they are exhibiting any symptoms in the wake of the rising number of Covid-19 cases being reported in the state.

Some schools in Bengaluru commenced classes for the academic year 2025-26 on May 26. Even as schools have assured parents that there is no need for panic, parents have been called upon to follow some Covid guidelines. Parents have been asked to keep symptomatic children at home.

Since January 2025, Karnataka has reported 98 cases of Covid according to statistics provided by the department of health and family welfare.

“In light of ongoing health alerts related to emerging COVID new variants and other viral infections, KAMS advises all schools to stay vigilant and proactive, before reopening of schools follow SOP & sanitize, while avoiding panic. The safety and well-being of students, staff, and families remain a shared responsibility,” said Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka in a statement.

KAMS also said that as routine and responsible practice, any student exhibiting symptoms of viral infections (e.g., fever, cough, cold, rashes, or allergies) must not be sent to school. “Parents should be advised to seek immediate medical care. Reinforce this policy with additional care in the context of the current COVID variant alerts. Schools must not allow students who are on medication or recovering from illness to attend classes just for attendance purposes. Educate parents that the health of all children is a priority over attendance records,” said D Shashi Kumar, general secretary, KAMS.

While ensuring that children are advised to follow all hygiene practices, schools are instructed that should a child fall ill during school hours, they must be isolated immediately, offered first aid and parents must be informed to seek medical attention without delay.
