Karnataka’s Medical Education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash R Patil asked department directed officials to conduct inspection and seal the nursing colleges with inadequate facilities.
Patil chaired a meeting with the members of the nursing college managements and medical education department on Thursday and said that he had received complaints about the lack of infrastructure facilities in many nursing colleges.
The minister said that action will be taken against colleges which failed to provide basic infrastructure facilities despite collecting fees from students and availing all benefits from the government.
He instructed Director of Medical Education Dr Sujatha Rathore, present in the meeting, to inspect and seal those colleges that have erred.
Expressing displeasure against the managements of private colleges, Dr Patil said that the government went soft on the managements hoping that they would rectify their mistakes but to no avail.
“Barring a few, most colleges lack basic infrastructure, have inadequate teaching and non-teaching staff, library and laboratory facilities, hygiene and other issues. They collect huge fees from students at the time of admission but fail to provide facilities,” the minister said
No fee hike
The minister also rejected a request by colleges to provide a 20% fee hike. He suggested that the management provide 40% seats under government quota. There are 35,000 seats available in 611 nursing colleges. The management fills 80 per cent while 20 per cent is alloted under government quota.
