Founded in 1925, Loyola College, Chennai is a Catholic minority institution that has morphed into one of India’s most respected undergraduate colleges, reputed for empowering the socially disadvantaged through high-quality education. Situated on a 99-acre verdant campus in the southern port city of Chennai, Loyola College is a landmark higher education institution of this bustling metropolis.
For the past ten years, this autonomous arts, commerce and science college affiliated with the University of Madras, has consistently been ranked among the Top 10 colleges of India and since 2006, among the country’s top three arts, science and commerce colleges by the Delhi-based weekly India Today. In the latest India Today-Nielsen survey (June 2011), Loyola is ranked second in science and third in the arts and commerce streams.
Placement:
Loyola’s sustained focus on academic excellence and life skills development has paid off by way of India Inc rolling out the red carpet for its alumni. In the academic year 2011-2012, 900-1,000 students were campus-recruited by over 25 companies who are regular visitors to the campus. These include Facebook, Google, HCL, Infosys Technologies, Wipro, HSBC Bank, Goldman Sachs and others which offer pay packages ranging from Rs.200, 000 – 500, 000 per annum.
The 99-acre college campus hosts spacious classrooms, an auditorium, multipurpose hall, well-furnished and digitalised library, computer cum language laboratory, biological science classroom with laboratory, smart classroom, seminar hall, psychology lab, maths classroom and physical science classroom with laboratory.
The central library houses a collection of more than 1,02,624 books, 102 journals, 15,580 e-journals and 3,78,000 e-books. The Loyola Digital Library is accessible 24/7 to the students.

Besides academics, the college offers space for all the students to identify and develop one’s potential to the maximum. The college has created a system of both academic and personal mentoring, besides counseling. It strives to instill a strong spirit of research among its students and encourages graduate students to engage in research for which it has also created a Research Park. Students are encouraged to develop empathy and concern for social causes through the outreach programme which is mandatory for all the students.
Application forms for admission are available in the second week of May every year. Completed application forms must reach the college office within ten days of the publication of the higher secondary examination results and before June 15 every year.
The college has 2 shifts, shift 1 is government aided while shift 2 is self financed.
Shift I- Rs.300-800 per annum for all undergrad and postgraduate programs.
Shift II- for all undergrad: Rs.14,000-30,000 per year; Postgraduate programs: Rs.15,000-41,000 per annum.
Loyola College has been accorded recognition as Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India with effect from January, 2011.
Loyola College was conferred the status of“College of Excellence”by UGC for the period April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2019.
India Today Magazine has ranked Loyola College among India’s Top 10 Arts, Commerce and Science colleges since 2006.
The Loyola Men’s Hostel and Loyola Women’s Hostel together have 836 rooms and can accommodate 1650 students.
