A teacher from BK Birla Public School in Kalyan, Shweta Pushkar Pathak, tragically lost her life in a rafting accident in Bali, Indonesia, on Saturday where she had been accompanying students on a school trip.
While she lost her life, three others had a miraculous escape. The incident took place when the raft capsized in a river.
Pathak was on an international school tour, accompanying a group of 16 students and staff members. News of her sudden demise reached Kalyan late Saturday night, leaving local authorities, students, and fellow teachers in shock.
On Sunday, the school issued an official statement to its community, mourning the loss of Pathak. The statement highlighted her deep passion for teaching, valuable contributions, and steadfast dedication, noting that she had left a lasting legacy. However, it did not provide specific details about the incident and requested privacy for her grieving family.
BK Birla Public School principal Ranjana Jangra, along with Pathak’s husband, are currently in Bali to manage the repatriation of her remains. The process has encountered delays due to ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, but her body is expected to arrive in Kalyan by Monday.
Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader and MP Supriya Sule has appealed to external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Indonesia to assist in expediting the return of the deceased teacher’s body to India.
“Shweta Pushkar Pathak from Kalyan, Maharashtra, passed away in Bali, Indonesia, on 9th May 2025. Her mortal remains are at Payangan Hospital, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. Requesting Hon @DrSJaishankar Ji, @MEAIndia, @MEAMadad, and @IndianEmbJkt to kindly assist with the transportation of her mortal remains,” Sule said in a post on social media platform X.
