Overview

Founded in 1957, Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal is a constituent institute of the Manipal University. MIT is one of the first self financing engineering colleges in the country and is today rated among the top five private engineering colleges in India. It became a constituent institute of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Manipal University) in 2000. MIT is known for its rich, vibrant campus life marked by technical, cultural and sports events running throughout the year.

The institute boasts a well-organized placement team headed by the associate director (industrial liaison, placements & practice school), comprising of faculty and student coordinators from each department. On an average, 60 companies visit MIT Manipal for campus recruitments every year.

Campus

MIT Manipal’s campus is located 65 km north of Mangalore. The campus is located three and a half km from Udupi’s railway station and is spread over an area of 188 acres housing 10 academic buildings, and 22 residential buildings, with a total capacity of 6,080 inhabitants.

The academic area of the campus is segregated from the rest of the campus. There are five academic buildings. Two of them – academic block 1 and academic block 2 – have been around since the inception of the campus, while the others were built as intake increased. Academic block 3 is also known as the new lecture hall. Academic block 4, also known as the innovation center, has the Manipal University’s incubation center, MUTBI (Manipal University Technology Business Incubator). Academic block 5 is the largest building on campus. The campus also houses several bookstores, stationery shops, restaurants, and a fruit shop. 

Sport facilities on campus include the student recreational centre (two tennis courts, two badminton courts and a gym), two basketball courts, a cricket/athletics field, a volleyball court, a football ground, a hockey field, and a swimming pool. In 2019, a boxing ring was inaugurated on campus. Marena Sports Complex is at a walking distance from the campus there are in-campus gyms in D Block and in 10th Block.

The MIT campus also houses hostel facilities.  The total housing capacity is 7,258 students, of which 70 percent is for men and 30 percent for women living in  MIT’s 26 hostel buildings. Hostel blocks for first year undergraduate students are different from those blocks that are for senior students.

The food court, with a seating capacity of 1200 people, caters to the food needs of about 840 people daily. A second food court was constructed in 2018 near the 16th and 17th Hostel Blocks.

Academics

MIT has been using a credit-based system since 2001, in which each course is assigned a number of credits. The odd semester starts around the month of July and ends by December and the even semester starts around January and ends by May. Manipal Academy of Higher Education is accredited by the Government of India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Research Programmes:

Ph.D.- The minimum duration for postgraduate qualified PhD students is three years for full-time, and four years for part-time. There is a one-year relaxation for applicants with an MPhil degree.

The institute undertakes sponsored research programs supported by funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, AICTE, and the Ministry of Environmental Sciences. It has collaborative research programs in association with premier research laboratories and institutes in India and abroad.

Placements:

  • Over 250 recruiting teams are reported to visit MIT Manipal for campus placements annually.
  • The MIT placement team is headed by the Associate Director (Industrial Liaison, Placements & Practice School), three Assistant Directors and comprises faculty and student coordinators from each department.
  • AY 2019-20 stats- MIT Manipal hosted over 292 recruiters in the 2020 placement drive who offered placements to 957 students – 1089 job opportunities under various industry sectors.
  • The highest recorded CTC was INR 43.31 LPA and the average recorded CTC stood at at INR. 7.5 LPA.
  • Some of the top recruiters in the 2020 placement drive were Accenture, Capgemini, Cleartax, Dell, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, HPE, L&T, MyGate and TCS. Core and product-based companies provided over 81% of the placement offers, while the rest of the offers were largely from IT companies.

Admission

Undergraduate Admissions:

Selection Criteria- Admissions to B.Tech. courses are conducted through the Manipal Entrance Test (MET).

Eligibility-

  • B.Tech.: 10+2 with a minimum of 50% marks in the Science stream
  • B.Tech lateral: Three-year diploma in Engineering
  • Applying candidates should have studied physics, mathematics and English as compulsory subjects and one of biotechnology, biology, chemistry or any vocational subject as optional, which must be related to either the chemical, civil, computer, electrical, or mechanical streams.

Admission Process-

  • Candidates must register and submit the online application form available on the official website.
  • Registered candidates must appear for the computer-based Manipal Entrance Test (MET) consisting of 200 questions testing physics, chemistry, mathematics, English, and logical reasoning, spanning a duration of two hours and 30 minutes. The test is for 800 marks, with four marks awarded for every correct answer and negative marking of one mark for every wrong answer.
  • Candidates shortlisted on the basis of their ranks in the MET will be eligible to appear for the five-round counselling process, followed by the verification of documents and payment of fees.

Postgraduate Admission- M.Tech.

Selection Criteria- Admissions to M.Tech. courses are conducted through the Manipal Entrance Test (MET) PG conducted by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).

Eligibility- applying candidates should have a B.Tech. degree with a minimum of 50% marks. Candidates with a qualified GATE score will be allotted an additional 10%.

Admission Process-

  • Students must register and submit the online application form available on the official website along with the application and entrance test fees payment.
  • Registered candidates must appear for the computer-based Manipal Entrance Test (MET) consisting of 200 questions testing Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, and logical reasoning, spanning a duration of two hours and 30 minutes. The test is for 800 marks, with four marks awarded for every correct answer and negative marking of one mark for every wrong answer.
  • Candidate are advised to have appeared for GATE exams as applicants with a GATE score will be given greater weightage during the selection process.
  • Candidates shortlisted on the basis of their ranks in the MET will be eligible to appear for the MET PG counselling process. After completing the choice filling and choice locking process, candidate must verify all requisite documents and pay fees to confirm admission at MIT Manipal.

Postgraduate Admissions- M.Sc. and M.C.A.

Selection Criteria- Merit based

Eligibility- B.C.A. or B.Sc. in Computer Science or IT with 50% marks

Admission Process-

  • Candidates must fill out and submit the online application forms along with the required documents.
  • Admission to M.Sc. and M.C.A. programmes will be based on merit, i.e, aggregate percentage of candidates in their undergraduate degree programmes.
  • Shortlisted candidates must verify documents and pay the requisite fee to confirm admission to MIT Manipal.

Achievement

Manipal Institute of Technology has been ranked fifth in the Education World India Engineering Colleges Rankings 2020-21.

MIT Manipal was ranked 45 among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020 and 43 in 2019.

Accommodation

The MIT campus houses comfortable hostels for boys and girls, under the management of the Hostel Management Committee. It is mandatory for all first year students to reside in the hostels.

The total housing capacity in MIT’s 26 hostel buildings is 7,258 students, of which 70% is for men and 30% for women. Of this, 95% is occupied by undergraduate students. First year students can choose their rooms on a “first come, first served” basis, while academic performance, seniority and student preference determine the room allotments for subsequent years for undergraduate students. Hostel blocks for first year undergraduate students are different from those blocks that are for senior students.
