Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Wednesday said to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Education Department is extending its full support to district authorities and the Health Department. The Minister said that besides providing all government schools in the state for the creation of isolation centres, the Education Department has also provided 10 meritorious schools to the Deputy Commissioners to use them as COVID-19 care isolation centres.
The Minister had visited Meritorious School, Ghabdan, to review the measures being taken to create isolation centre. Singla said that as over 8,000 beds are available in hostels of these residential meritorious schools and around 200 classrooms can also be used for other medical purposes by the health experts. Singla said that these schools are located in Amritsar, Bathinda, Ferozpur, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Sangrur, and Hoshiarpur districts.
Punjab has recorded a total of 197 cases so far and 14 people have died due to the infection in the state. Twenty nine patients have also recovered from the infection in the state according to the state health ministry. The centre has identified four districts in Punjab as hotspots that include SAS Nagar, SBS Nagar, Jalandhar and Pathankot. These districts have reported more than 15 cases of COVID-19.
