Microsoft Corp (India) Pvt. Ltd and Sify Technologies Ltd (a leader in consumer internet and enterprise services in India with global delivery capabilities) have joined forces to enhance digital literacy skills in India. As per a partnership agreement announced in February, 2000 Sify e-Port cyber cafes across the country will offer two specific courses in e-learning model — Digital Literacy and Windows & Office Essentials. Sify e-Ports are India ’s largest network of internet browsing centres sited in 200 cities and towns countrywide. The objective of Microsoft India’s Digital Literacy program is to teach baseline ICT skills (computer basics, internet usage, computer security and privacy) to learners. The Windows & Office Essentials program will enhance the Windows XP/Vista & Office 2007 usage skills of students. On successful completion of these courses, learners will be ready to take an online assessment test, successful completion of which will entitle them to receive a Microsoft Certificate of Completion. “These e-learning programs equip learners with basic IT skills to enhance their employability. They are being offered across the largest chain of cafes in India, making it accessible to the thousands of people who use cyber cafés,” said Anoop Gupta vice president of Microsoft India addressing the media. The Digital Literacy course takes about 20 hours to complete, while the Windows & Office Essentials program requires 60 hours.
