Mithibai College was established by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal in 1961. The Mithibai College of Arts and Chauhan Institute of Science, commonly known as the main wing, were promoted first and the Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce & Economics & Kathak was started in 1980. The Mithibai College is affiliated with Mumbai University and has more than 10,000 students, 217 teaching staff and 174 non-teaching staff. It is a Gujarati minority institution and has 50 percent reservation for students of the Gujarati-speaking community besides reservation for SC/ST/OBC/females as per government norms.
The college has a state of the art, fully air conditioned college library with more than 57,000 books and 109 journals and periodicals. The library has 13 books and 3 journals in Braille for visually challenged students. Specially designed benches have been provided in the library for physically challenged students. The college also has two well-equipped computer labs with 44 computers and one server. Besides a central computing facility, eight departments also have computers.

Junior College Admissions to the first year junior college happen online. In fact admission to the junior college sections of all institutions run by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal is through the online process only. Application forms are available on the following websites usually from mid-June: www.mithibai.svkm.ac.in www.nmcollege.in The eligibility criterion for junior college admissions is successful completion of class X. However students who have passed the class X exam through CBSE Board are eligible to applyonly if they have appeared for theCBSE board examandnotat the examination conducted at school level. Applicants who have passed their examinations from CBSE Board are required to submit a certificate from the Principal / Head Master /Head Mistress of the school stating that the student has appeared for the board examination and not the School Examination.No admission form will be accepted without this certificate. Undergraduate For admission into undergrad programmes, eligibility requirement is successful completion of class XII/ junior college. Admissions into first year B.A / B.Sc. / B.Com. /B.M.S. classes are conducted as per the guidelines and schedule announced by the University of Mumbai. The schedule of admission is displayed on the Notice Board in June-July.
The college was accredited with Grade B++ by NAAC.
