Overview

Mount Carmel College, Bangalore admitted its first batch of 50 women students on July 7, 1948. The all-women’s college offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across the faculties arts, science, home science and commerce. The college has been awarded 'A+' accreditation and five stars by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. In 2006, the University Grants Commission identified it as a College with Potential for Excellence (CPE). The college also enjoys ‘autonomous’ status. The college is managed by the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of Sr. Teresa of St. Rose of Lima and is affiliated with Bangalore University. Initially, the college was affiliated with Mysore University.

Campus

The college is spread over an area of 256,256 square feet with many gardens, trees, and open spaces. The classrooms are spacious and well ventilated. The campus comprises well-equipped labs, seminar and lecture rooms, auditoria and conference halls, canteen and kiosks, a stationery shop open during college hours, a chapel and a prayer room for students and faculty of various faiths. Three well-stocked libraries cater to the needs of pre-university, degree and undergraduate and postgraduate students with more than 91,000 books, 150 periodicals, 15 newspapers, 2000 CDs and DVDs and internet facility. The college also provides photocopy services. Other facilities available on campus include a rest room for the faculty, a non-residential student center, a branch of UCO Bank, a well-equipped gym that students can use by paying a nominal monthly fee. The college also has qualified counselors on campus.

Academics

Pre-university: Arts, science, commerce and home science Undergraduate Courses The courses are conducted in accordance with the norms and regulations of Bangalore University: Part 1: English Part 2: Second Language (Kannada Hindi Tamil Sanskrit French German) Part 3: A combination of Three Core Subjects in the chosen course. Students who have not studied the above-mentioned languages can opt for Additional English after obtaining the necessary certification of exemption. Admission

Application forms can be downloaded from the college website or collected at the college office. The dates for the issue of application forms are as follows: I B.A B.Sc B.Com: On the day of the announcement of the Karnataka PUC or 12th Std, ICSE results, whichever is earlier. I M.Com and I M.CA: On the day of the Bangalore University III Year results. PGDBA and PGDMIS: The first week of January.

Achievement

Mount Carmel College was the first women's college in Karnataka and the first women’s college to start PGDBA in India. It was also the first in Karnataka to start the NCC wing and one of the first colleges in Bangalore to be granted permanent affiliation by Bangalore University. The college was also selected for the India Study Abroad Program by the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Northern Essex and by the ICCR and Educational Consultants (India) for foreign students. The college has also won the Dr. Job Memorial Award for "Excellent and Innovative Programs".
