It was a glorious moment for Mumbai University when it bagged the Gold medal at the All India Level Tournament in Table Tennis after 25 years.
The championship started on February 7 with North Zone Table Tennis tournament witnessing a participation of 60 men’s teams and 55 women’s teams. The four girls in the winning team were Semhora D’souza from Khalsa College, Mansi Deshpande from Kelkar College, Rutuja Kopkar from SK Somaiya College of Arts, Science and Commerce and Jagruti Murbadkar from K J Somaiya College of Science and Commerce.
Interestingly, Rutuja Kopkar and Jagruti Murbadkar are students of colleges of Somaiya Vidyavihar, which emphasises heavily on sports in its drive towards holistic development.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Rajendra Welukar, provost, Somaiya Vidyavihar said, “We are proud of the achievements of the girls. At Somaiya Vidyavihar we create an atmosphere which encourages all kinds of sports. We believe that education institutions need to create the space to allow youth with a passion for sports to flourish. I am happy to see that our young girls have made Mumbai University proud”.
Commenting on her astounding win, Jagruti said, “I am so happy that all my hard work and dedication has paid off. If it had not been for the encouragement and cooperation that I received from my college, I don’t think that this would have been possible. I am going to continue working hard and strive to achieve many more such victories in the future”.
Rutuja added, “I would like to thank my college for the support and love that I have received. It was the belief and faith of my coach, and parents that I have achieved this today.”Posted in Campus
