Founded in 2010, Nalanda University, Rajgir was conceptualised as “an international institution for the pursuit of intellectual, philosophical, historical and spiritual studies”. The university offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The Government of India constituted a Nalanda Mentor Group (NMG) under the Chairmanship of Professor AmartyaSen to examine the framework of international co-operation, and proposed structure of partnership, which would govern the establishment of this university as an international centre of education.
Its objective is to impart education and to enable research towards capacity building of the member states in the domain of ancient science (in particular, practised in the Nalanda several centuries ago), philosophy, language, history and other areas of higher learning vital for improving the quality of life.
The university hosts state-of-the-art infrastructure with modern classrooms, world class laboratories and a well-stocked library.
Currently two schools are operational under the university.

Admission to the postgraduate courses is based on performance in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET PG).
