Overview

National Law School of India University, Bengaluru (NLSIU) is a highly esteemed institution committed to undergraduate and graduate legal education in India.

One of the most prestigious law schools in India, NLSIU was founded by a statute passed by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Karnataka. It was officially founded on August 29, 1987 and presently the school’s chief administrator is Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy, the vice-chancellor.

The undergraduate programs at NLSIU took off on July 1, 1988, and NLSIU conducted classes at the premises of the Central College of Bangalore University until November 1991. The school later shifted formally to the Nagarbhavi suburb of Bangalore, its present home.

NLSIU has about 500 students, about 400 in the undergraduate program and 100 in postgraduate program. NLSIU boasts an esteemed list of recruiters which include Bajaj Allianz, Fox Mandal Little & Co., Edelweiss Corporate, DLF Limited, Clifford Chance, Faculty of Law, Delhi University, KPMG LLP, and IBM among others.

Campus

Situated in Nagarbhavi, Bangalore, NLSIU sits on a lush green campus of 23 acres that offers ample space for students to unwind after a day of intense learning. The campus comprises an academic block, student hostels, faculty quarters, a state-of-the-art library, canteens, a health centre, gym facilities, and discussion rooms among other spaces for academic and community-based activities.

NLSIU is a fully residential learning community, seeking to offer all students the benefits of belonging to a vibrant and diverse student community – both inside and outside the classroom.

Sports facilities on campus include a basketball court, a tennis court, an indoor facility for table tennis, a football stadium, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, an aerobics and yoga center. Care is taken to ensure that all the facilities and equipment cater to the various needs of the students.

NLSIU conducts placement drives annually, enabling recruiters to offer jobs to final year undergraduate as well as postgraduate students.

Recent placement highlights- 2020: A total of 56 students among 77 eligible students of the UG-5 years batch were placed into reputed corporations, while six students were chosen for higher studies. The median CTC stood at INR 15 LPA, while the overall highest CTC offered was INR 18 LPA. Top recruiters included Trilegal, ICICI bank, L&L Partners and Societe Generale.

Admission

Undergraduate admission- B.A. LL.B.

Selection criteria: CLAT scores.

Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) and not beyond 20 years of age (22 for reserved categories).

Admission procedure:

Candidates must apply for admission by filling out the online application form from the official website along with the submission of required documents and payment of the application fee.
Candidates have to apply and appear for the CLAT exam and secure a valid score.
CLAT cutoffs will soon be released, on the basis of which candidates shall be shortlisted.
Shortlisted candidates will have to attend the CLAT counselling session for choice filling and the allocation of seats, where they may proceed with document verification and fee payment to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- L.L.M.

Selection criteria: CLAT PG scores.

Eligibility: LL.B. (or other relevant degree) from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 55% marks (50% for reserved categories).

Admission procedure:

Candidates must apply for admission by filling out the online application form from the official website along with the submission of required documents and payment of the application fee.
Candidates have to apply and appear for the CLAT PG exam and secure a valid score.
CLAT PG cutoffs will soon be released, on the basis of which candidates shall be shortlisted.
Shortlisted candidates will have to attend the CLAT PG counselling session for choice filling and the allocation of seats, where they may proceed with document verification and fee payment to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate admission- M.P.P.

Selection criteria: PAT entrance scores and performance in personal interview.

Eligibility for M.P.P.: Relevant degree from a recognised university.

Admission procedure:

Candidates must apply for admission by filling out the online application form from the official website along with the submission of required documents and payment of the application fee.
Candidates have to appear for the policy aptitude test (PAT) which will be conducted in two parts. This is followed by a personal interview.
Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their PAT entrance scores and performance in personal interview. Shortlisted candidates may proceed with document verification and fee payment to confirm their admission.

Doctoral admission- M.Phil. and Ph.D.

Selection criteria: Performance in entrance test and interview/oral presentation.

Eligibility: LL.M. or any relevant master’s degree from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 55% (50% for reserved categories).

Admission procedure:

Candidates must apply for admission by filling out the online application form from the official website along with the submission of required documents and payment of the application fee.
Candidates have to appear for an entrance test, which will be followed by an interview/oral presentation.
Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their performance in entrance test and interview/oral presentation and assessment of research proposal. Shortlisted candidates may proceed with document verification and fee payment to confirm their admission.

Achievement

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked NLSIU, Bengaluru first among Indian law colleges in 2020.

NLSIU was ranked first by India Today’s “India’s Best Law Colleges 2020”, Outlook India’s “Top 30 Law Colleges in 2019” and The Week’s “Top Law Colleges in 2019”.

Accommodation

The NLSIU campus has faculty and students residing in the same campus, increasing interaction and adjustment.

There are four hostels for men- Ganga, Cauvery, Himalaya and Hoogli, and six hostels for women -Nilgiris, Narmada, Yamuna, Gangotri, Vindhyas (Annexe block) and Annapoorna (Mess Block).

First year students are provided separate accommodation and allotted shared rooms in dormitories, and second year onwards, students have the option of triple sharing rooms. Women students have a choice between twin-sharing and triple-sharing rooms. Generally final year students are given single occupancy rooms.

Hostels offer essential facilities like furniture, hot and cold water, laundry facilities etc.
