National Law University Delhi is profoundly honoured to welcome Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, former Chief Justice of India, as a Distinguished Professor. This landmark association heralds a transformative chapter in Indian legal education, bringing one of the country’s most visionary jurists into the academic fold to mentor and inspire the next generation of legal thinkers, scholars, and changemakers.
According to Prof. (Dr.) G.S. Bajpai, Vice Chancellor of NLU Delhi, the collaboration will include the establishment of a dedicated Centre for Constitutional Studies under the guidance of Justice Chandrachud. “Justice Chandrachud’s legacy in constitutional morality, transformative constitutionalism, and dynamic interpretation of fundamental rights offers unparalleled empirical and doctrinal material for academic inquiry,” Prof. Bajpai stated.
As part of this initiative, the university will launch In the Spirit of Justice: The DYC Distinguished Lecture Series starting July 2025. The series aims to engage students with contemporary legal challenges through Justice Chandrachud’s forward-looking perspective. From landmark judgments on privacy, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender justice to pathbreaking work on digital freedoms and judicial reforms, his presence is set to deeply enrich the academic ecosystem at NLU Delhi.
This association reaffirms NLU Delhi’s commitment to advancing legal scholarship that bridges rigorous academic theory with the imperative of social transformation.
