NTA postpones UGC NET examination

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to postpone the UGC-National Eligibility Test (NET) scheduled to be held from May 2 to 17. According to a statement, “Looking at the present situation of the Covid-19 pandemic and also taking into account the safety and well-being of the candidates and examination functionaries, it has been decided to postpone the UGC-NET December 2020 cycle (May 2021) examination.”

The revised dates for the exam will be announced at least 15 days prior to the examination. 

Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ also confirmed the development and requested people to stay safe. He tweeted, “Keeping in mind the safety and wellbeing of candidates and exam functionaries during Covid-19 outbreak, I have advised @DG_NTA to postpone the UGC-NET Dec 2020 cycle (May 2021) exams.”

Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked heads of all universities and colleges to adopt a five-fold strategy focusing on testing, tracing, treatment, Covid- appropriate behavior and vaccination to curb transmission of the virus. In a advisory issued to institutions of higher education, UGC secretary Rajnish Jain has asked vice-chancellors of all universities and principals of all colleges to direct their teachers, staff and students to spread awareness about the disease in order to deal with the present situation.

Some of the dos and don’ts which the institutions have been asked to emphasize during the campaign include: “Always cover mouth with mask, Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap & water or use alcohol-based sanitizer, Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth, Get vaccinated, Maintain Social Distancing, Avoid Large Gatherings.“
