Punjab: Govt to reopen schools for primary classes from Jan 27

January 21, 2021

The Punjab government announced on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 that it has decided to reopen primary classes at all schools from January 27.

“Following persistent demand of parents, the state government has decided to reopen all schools for primary classes from January 27,” Education minister Vijay Inder Singla said in a statement.

The minister also added that the students of classes 3 and 4 will be allowed to attend the school from January 27 while classes classes 1 and 2 can rejoin physical classes from February 1.

The timings will remain the same from 10 am to 3 pm and parents will have to give written consent before sending their wards to schools.

Singla directed officials and school managements to ensure proper cleaning of premises and follow the Covid-19 safety norms. He said detailed guidelines will be issued soon to all district education officers, which will be circulated to all government, aided and private schools.

Earlier this month, the state government had reopened schools for Classes 5 to 12.

Earlier, Singla had announced that schools in the state will reopen for classes 5 to 12 from January 7. The schools will remain open from 10 am to 3 pm. Accordingly, the state’s School Education Department issued detailed guidelines for educational institutes in areas outside containment zones to ensure students’ safety amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Singla also added that online or distance learning shall continue to be the preferred mode of teaching, despite the reopening of schools, and attendance of all students will not be mandatory.
