Overview

Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, Tamil Nadu is a residential school for boys affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. It is one of the twenty four Sainik Schools in the country and was founded on July 16, 1962 by former Defence minister Krishna Menon. Known as Sainik School, Madras (SSM) until 1975, Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, was formed with the objective of training cadets to join the National Defence Academy – NDA.

Character, team spirit, dedication to purpose, a patriotic outlook and a desire to serve the country with zeal and efficiency are the qualities promoted by the school. The school boasts 650 students and 50 faculty members.

The school also houses a pre-primary and primary division called the Amar Sainik Nursery and Primary School (ASNPS) that came into being in 1985 to cater to the needs of the Sainik staff children and the residents of nearby villages. Started with 50 children, the school now boasts about 655 cadets.

Campus

The Sainik School, Amaravathinagar campus occupies 240 acres in the Indira Gandhi National Park’s valley and hosts well-equipped and spacious classrooms with a maximum strength of 35-40 children in a classroom. The language laboratory is used to encourage children to speak fluently in English, Hindi and Tamil, spacious indoor as well as open-air auditoriums are used to conduct assembly, extracurricular activities and various cultural programs.

The school houses a well stocked library, a reading room and a motivation room with all the latest information on careers in armed forces.

Academics

The nursery and primary school ASNPS follows the state Matriculation syllabus from LKG to class V. The school not only offers matriculation syllabus in class V but also gives priority to CBSE syllabus required for entrance examination (i.e. math, English, intelligence and aptitude test). The school also offers coaching for entry into Sainik School.

The education in the school follows CBSE pattern and the examinations provided by this system.

The school promotes clubs for math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer, environment, craft and art to provide the cadets more practical exposure to the subjects they study. These clubs have activities to strengthen the academic knowledge of the cadets. Cadets as teams make working and non-working models for better understanding of the scientific theories and phenomena.

Extracurricular: The school promotes clubs for parasailing, horse riding, karate, cycling, rock climbing and ham radio to make its cadets physically tough and mentally alert.

The school has a social service club which carries out various social service activities on weekends and national festivals like Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanthi Day.

Sports and extracurricular include football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, cricket, athletics, cross-country running, swimming, gymnastics, canoeing, cycling, horse riding, mountaineering, parasailing, trekking (hiking), obstacles course, rifle shooting, boxing, NCC, karate, music clubs, literary clubs, theater arts, elocution, photography, fine arts, craftwork, philately, aero-modeling, ship-modeling, Marching band, and school choir.

Admission

For admission in class VI, the child should have completed 10 years of age but not completed 11 years as on July 1, of the year of admission and should not have appeared for Sainik School Entrance Examination from any other centre of India earlier.

For admission in class IX, the child should have completed 13 years of age but not completed 14 years as on July 1 of the year of admission and should be studying in class VIII in a recognized school. He should not have appeared for Sainik School Entrance Examination for Class IX from any other center in India earlier.

There are approximately 100 seats for class VI and 20 seats for class IX. However, total vacancies may vary depending upon withdrawal/passing out of XII class boys.

Fees

The annual tuition fee in Sainik School is Rs.56,418 and dietary expense is Rs.15,486 approximately.

The tuition fee and dietary can be paid by the parents in half yearly and yearly mode only. In addition to the above, the following fees are also to be paid by the parents at the time of admission – clothing fees of Rs 1,500 in the first year and Rs 750 in subsequent years, caution money of Rs 3,000 for general category and Rs 1,500 for SC/ST category students and pocket money of Rs 15,000 which includes Rs.12,000 towards incidental charges p.a.

The individual requirement of the boys for all the items as well as additional facilities will be provided from the school on payment for which a sum of Rs.30,000 is required to be paid by the parents at the time of admission.

Fees should be sent only by means of a ‘Demand Draft’ drawn in favour of “The Principal, Sainik School, Amaravathinagar” payable at “State Bank of India, Amaravathinagar Branch” (Branch Code No.2191).

Achievement

Sainik School, Amaravathinagar is ranked among the best boys boarding schools in India by the EducationWorld India School Rankings 2020-21.

Two cadets of Sainik School Amaravathinagar – Ameer Khan and Ram Prabhu successfully scaled the Leh Peak in the expedition conducted by Sainik School, Karnal, Haryana.

Cadet Pulipandian was adjudged the Best Climber by Jawahar Mountaineering Institute, Pahalagaon, Kashmir.

Ministry of communication has granted license to establish an Amateur Wireless Telegraph Station called “Sainik Amateur Radio Society” with call sign VU2 HCR.

The school’s arts club members won National Level Awards in the drawing and painting competitions conducted by the Creative Arts Academy, Mumbai.
