Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, following heavy artillery and mortar shelling by Pakistan in the border districts along the Line of Control, schools and colleges have been closed.
Since May 7, Pakistan has been targeting forward villages in Jammu and Kashmir, several border districts in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan forcing administration in these areas to shut down schools and other educational institutions as a precautionary measure.
On May 7 night, Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India and attempts were foiled by the Indian Armed forces and Air Defence Radars. So far, at least 16 lives have been lost along the LoC.
This precaution follows intensified cross-border shelling, which resulted in casualties, particularly in the Poonch district where at least eight people were killed and 29 others injured. In response, Pakistan authorized retaliatory actions, escalating the situation further. The temporary closure is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff amid the ongoing hostilities.
All schools, colleges, and educational institutions in the districts of Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch remained closed on May 7, 2025, due to rising tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu has announced that these institutions will also stay shut on May 8 as a safety measure.
