Schools told to curb sugar intake: CBSE launches health awareness drive

With studies showing a significant increase in Type 2 diabetes among children, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed affiliated schools to create awareness among students about the trend and provide them with regular information about the health risks involved in excessive sugar consumption, as well as the kinds of food they should avoid to reduce sugar intake.

In a circular issued to principals this week, the CBSE has directed schools to establish “Sugar Boards” to educate students about their food choices and organise seminars and workshops to raise awareness.

Type 2 diabetes is a disease generally seen in adults. The CBSE said, “Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in Type 2 diabetes among children, a condition once primarily seen in adults. This alarming trend is largely attributed to high sugar intake, often due to the easy availability of sugary snacks, beverages, and processed foods within school environments…”

Excessive sugar consumption not only increases the risk of diabetes but also contributes to obesity, dental problems, and other metabolic disorders, which ultimately impact children’s long-term health and academic performance, the CBSE said.

The health risks are associated with unhealthy meals such as junk food and cold drinks. One of the main functions of the proposed Sugar Boards will be to suggest healthier dietary alternatives and ensure that students follow these suggestions.

The Sugar Board will educate students about healthier food choices and promote long-term health benefits among them, the CBSE said.

The CBSE, citing studies, said that sugar constitutes 13 percent of daily calorie intake for children aged 4 to 10 years, and 15 percent for those aged 11 to 18 years, which is substantially higher than the recommended limit of five percent.
