Overview

Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok (SMU) is a co-educational public-private funded university based in Tadong, Gangtok, Sikkim. Set up in 1995, the university is credited as being the first P3 educational and healthcare initiative in the region. With the motto ‘inspired learning’, the university aims to impart exemplary educational opportunities and health care services in the state of Sikkim and elsewhere.

The university has two campuses – the Technology Campus at Majitar, Rangpo and the Medical Campus and Tadong, Gangtok – both recognised by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(F) of the UGC Act 1956. In 2012, the university introduced the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences which covers subjects such as Sociology, Commerce, Political Science, English and History.

Campus

Sikkim Manipal University offers hostel facilities for students at both campuses i.e. technical campus at Majitar and Medical campus at Tadong Sikkim. The hostels house state-of-the-art facilities to make every student feel comfortable and secure. The hostel rooms are equipped with a cot, mattress, study table, chair, book rack and wardrobe for each student. Every hostel has uninterrupted electricity, hot water facility during winters, water cooler with Aquaguard filters, recreation hall, gymnasium and indoor games facilities.

All students are required to submit three passport size photographs for hostel admission at the time of counselling. Hostel dues such as mess and utility deposit may be paid at the time of counselling or registration/admission. The students need to pay the hostel fee for the entire year for retaining accommodation beyond a period of six months. Students who do not complete their studies within the regular period stipulated for the course need to vacate their hostel rooms. However, they may be allotted alternative accommodation as per availability for a further term(s) on non-priority basis subject to the condition that 50 percent of the annual hostel facilities fee will be charged from such students for a term not exceeding six months.

The SMU placement department is highly focused towards enabling career development for all students and alumni. The placement assistance programs have helped bridge the talent gap plaguing various industries and job markets, helping over 9000 students take a step ahead in their careers through our multiple initiatives and widespread alumni network.

To facilitate opportunities for students and alumni, SMU has launched a job fair program which are scheduled to be conducted across India with participation of top companies across diverse industries. Top recruiters include American Express, Axis Securities, Capgemini, Fidelity, Genpact, HDFC Realty, Jet Airways, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Motilal Oswal and Sodexo and Via.com.

Recent placement highlights- 2019-20: A total of 408 job offers were made to 378 (IT section) registered candidates, where the highest CTC was INR 18 LPA, while the average CTC stood at INR 4.85 LPA. Top recruiters in 2020 included Microsoft, Amazon, Dell, Shell, Infosys and TCS.

Admission

Undergraduate Admissions-

Selection Criteria: Academic merit in qualifying (10+2) examinations.

Eligibility: 10+2 in relevant stream from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates must register for admissions by applying online via the official website of SMU, along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates shall be shortlisted on the basis of their academic merit in qualifying (10+2) examinations.
• Candidates whose name appears in the merit list will have to attend the counselling session for the allocation of seats. Candidates selected for admission may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Engineering Admissions- B.Tech., M.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc. (IT)

Selection Criteria: SMIT/MAHE OET entrance scores.

JEE (Main) and GATE scores also accepted for B.Tech. and M.Tech. respectively.

Eligibility: 10+2 with PCM from a recognised board for UG engineering admission.

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline from a recognised university for PG engineering admission.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates must register for admissions by applying online via the official website of SMU, along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates will be shortlisted for based on their SMIT or MAHE-OET scores. JEE (Main) and GATE scores also accepted for B.Tech. and M.Tech. respectively.
• Shortlisted candidates will have to attend the counselling session for the allocation of seats. Candidates selected for admission may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

M.B.A. Admissions-

Selection Criteria: CAT/MAT/university entrance test scores and performance in GD/PI.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates must register for admissions by applying online via the official website of SMU, along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates have to appear for a university-conducted entrance test (exempted if candidate has valid CAT/MAT scores) followed by a group discussion (GD) and/or personal interview (PI).
• Candidates will be shortlisted based on their CAT/MAT/university entrance test scores and performance in GD/PI. Selected candidates may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Medical Admissions (M.B.B.S./M.D./M.S.)

Selection Criteria: NEET scores and ranks.

Eligibility: 10+2 with PCB from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks for UG medical courses.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates must register for admissions by applying online via the official website of SMU, along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates have to apply and appear for the NEET exams and secure a valid score.
• Candidates will then have to appear for the counselling session for choice locking and allocation of seats. Candidates allotted seats may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admissions-

Selection Criteria: Academic merit in qualifying examinations (graduation).

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates shall be shortlisted on the basis of their academic merit in qualifying examinations (graduation).

Doctoral Admissions- Ph.D.

Selection Criteria: University-conducted entrance test/NET scores and academic merit.

Eligibility: Master’s degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university.

Admission Procedure:

• Candidates must register for admissions by applying online via the official website of SMU, along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
• Candidates shall be shortlisted on the basis of their academic merit for M.Phil.
• Candidates will have to appear for a university-conducted entrance test (NET scores also accepted).
• Candidates will be shortlisted based on their academic merit (M.Phil.) and university-conducted entrance test/NET scores (Ph.D.). Candidates selected for admission may verify their documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Achievement

SMIT achieved a placement rate of 92 percent in 2012.

SMIT was ranked 8th among India’s Top Private Engineering Colleges by CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey, 2014.
