Overview

Sishya School is a co-educational day school affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). It was established in 1972 by K. I. Thomas after his retirement from the Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty with just 28 students on its roll. Today, Sishya School has over 1166 students drawn from all parts of the country.

The school is governed by the KIT Thomas Educational Society, an irrevocable trust that now owns and controls the management of the school.

Campus

The five-acre Sishya School campus houses fully equipped laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology as well as classes VIII to XII. The pre-school complex consists of little cottages (renovated into smart classrooms in 2017) and a play area complete with a stage. Apart from a state-of-the-art library, the Thangam Thomas Library Block houses, the grade XI and XII classrooms, the art department, and an audio-visual room.

The senior block was built in 1984 nearly 10 years after Sishya moved to Adyar. It houses an auditorium which was completely renovated as a multipurpose hall in 2007 with additional classrooms above.

The playing fields are extensive and include fields for football, cricket, hockey, and volleyball. The school also has a badminton court, basketball court, a golf driving range as well as an indoor area for table tennis.

The Sishya canteen forms a favourite student spot on campus ensuring dietary nourishment for all its pupils.

Academics

In Primary School (classes II to V), the main emphasis is on the all-round development of the child through the “learning to play” method of instruction-a combination of the traditional and the Montessori guided by the prescribed syllabus of the council. Children are introduced to computer studies from class I onwards. They are also introduced to the study of Tamil and Hindi as a second/third language from class I.

All children from classes IX to XII participate in socially useful productive work (SUPW) which aims to equip students with varied skills which include carpentry, crafts and first-aid and practical activities like changing a tyre and fixing a bulb. SUPW also encompasses social service.

Being affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the school conducts two examinations in senior school: the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Examination for class X students and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examinations for class XII students.
